According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, currently (January 21), the cold air mass that landed on the afternoon of January 20 has affected the Northeast region, some places in the Northwest region and the North Central region. The mountainous areas of the North have experienced severe cold, some places are very cold.
It is noteworthy that in the North there is a strong cold air mass strengthening to the South.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Weather Forecast Department, during the day and night of tomorrow (January 22), this cold air mass will affect the Northern, North Central, and Central Central regions and then affect some places in the South Central region. The Northeast wind inland will gradually strengthen to level 3, coastal areas level 4-5, gusting to level 6-7.
Due to the influence of consecutive strong cold air masses, from the night of January 21, the weather in the North and Thanh Hoa will be extremely cold; from the night of January 22, it will also be extremely cold from Nghe An to Ha Tinh . From the evening and night of January 22, the weather will turn extremely cold from Quang Binh to Thua Thien Hue.
During this cold air mass, the lowest temperature in the North is generally from 7-10 degrees, in the mountainous areas of the North from 3-6 degrees, in the high mountains below 0 degrees in some places; in the North Central region from 9-11 degrees; in the area from Quang Binh to Thua Thien Hue from 13-16 degrees.
Mr. Huong said that the widespread cold spell in the North and Thanh Hoa is likely to last until about January 25; in Nghe An and Ha Tinh until January 24.
In particular, during this widespread cold spell, high mountainous areas are likely to experience snow and ice.
In addition, due to the influence of cold air, from the night of January 21-22, the Northern region and Thanh Hoa will have scattered rain and thunderstorms in some places.
From the afternoon and night of January 22, in the area from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall of 20-40mm, in some places over 50mm.

Localized heavy rains may cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Thunderstorms may cause tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
Previously, Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that the coldest period of this severe cold spell will fall between January 22 and 25. In addition, compared to the cold spell from December 16, 2023, this cold spell will make people feel colder because there is no or very little chance of sunshine. The temperature range between day and night is low.
