Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a condition that can lead to severe vision loss and even blindness if not detected and treated promptly.

About 5 days ago, Ms. N. (50 years old, Hanoi ) suddenly discovered that her right eye vision had suddenly decreased without any pain or any other unusual symptoms. The patient had no history of trauma or any previous health changes. Therefore, she went to Medlatec General Hospital for examination and check-up.

After conducting clinical examination and paraclinical techniques, the visual acuity results showed that the right eye was only 3/10, even wearing glasses did not improve vision.

It is noteworthy that when examining the fundus, the doctor discovered optic disc edema, dilated retinal veins, and hemorrhages throughout the retina. Along with that, the retinal CT scan showed cystoid macular edema.

After further testing, Ms. N. was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). At this time, doctors prescribed treatment with Anti-VEGF injections to minimize the risk of vision damage.

Central retinal vein occlusion is a blood clot that blocks blood flow to the retina, especially the macula. It is a common cause of severe vision loss and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness.

According to Dr. Khuat Trang Anh, Head of Ophthalmology at Medlatec Healthcare System, central retinal vein occlusion can cause mild to severe vision loss and often appears suddenly.

Patients may experience narrowing of vision, seeing black spots in front of the eyes or partial loss of vision. However, this condition does not cause pain, redness or watery eyes, making patients easily subjective.

This condition can occur in people with cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, and other vascular diseases.

Research shows that about 70% of patients with central retinal vein occlusion have a history of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and smoking habits.

In particular, among retinal vascular diseases, central retinal vein occlusion is considered the second leading cause of blindness in the world , second only to diabetic retinopathy. This condition has been on the rise in recent years, mainly due to the increase in chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Trang Anh said that if central retinal vein occlusion is not treated promptly, it will cause dangerous complications such as glaucoma, bleeding in the eye, retinal detachment, and even blindness.

Therefore, early detection and timely treatment are very important to reduce the risk of serious complications. Specifically, people need to treat high-risk systemic diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and kidney disease to reduce the risk of central retinal vein occlusion.

Regular eye exams are especially important for older adults, those with vascular disease, or those with a history of nearsightedness. Annual eye exams help detect eye problems early and protect vision.

Follow a healthy and scientific diet, minimizing risk factors that cause blood vessel blockage. Limit fatty foods, increase physical activity and especially quit smoking to protect cardiovascular health and vision.

With the development of modern treatments such as Anti-VEGF injections, central retinal vein occlusion can be effectively treated if detected early. Therefore, always be alert to unusual symptoms of the eyes to protect your vision and prevent the risk of blindness.
