New CEO of Sacombank: I take responsibility not to do something different but to do it deeply

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhung affirmed the above in the first conversation after taking office as Acting General Director of Sacombank .

When you accepted the position of Acting General Director of Sacombank in the context of the bank just going through the restructuring phase, what was the first thing you thought of?

I don't think about financial goals first. I think about the question: "If we're going to be around in 10 years, what are we going to be around for?"

The 2025-2030 strategy should not be a list of targets, but a map of capabilities - with three anchor points: sustainable development, integrated social responsibility, and next-generation risk management. We do not aim to be the largest bank, but to be the bank that is trusted the longest in the most important decisions of our customers - from saving, investing to starting a business.

Taking on the position of Acting General Director of Sacombank, I made clear commitments in the direction of management in the coming time, not through past slogans, but through a journey of practical dialogue - about internal strength, institutions and long-term responsibilities.

Resolution 68 on private economic development considers digital transformation as a "new development method". What about Sacombank, sir?

Digital transformation is not about changing software or banking apps. It is about changing the entire structure of customer trust in the organization. Previously, customers had to trust people - now, they need to trust processes. Then, trust systems. Finally, trust the entire experience. We will transform not only the core technology, but also the definition of “service” - every time a customer interacts, the bank must prove that trust is correct.

Ho Chi Minh City is on the path to building an international financial center. What is Sacombank's role in this journey?

Sacombank does not necessarily need to become a global bank. But we can become a “regional credit locator” – that is, providing banking, payment, custody and credit services of regional quality, but with our own identity.

When the International Financial Center is formed, there will be many capital flows, data flows, and trust flows running through it. The bank that can coordinate these flows without breaking the internal structure - that bank will contribute to shaping the new order. We want to go in that direction and set goals and propose solutions to quickly achieve this goal.

The financial market has witnessed risks in liquidity, trust, etc., how can Sacombank maintain system safety while still growing?

The market is always volatile and risky, but I promise that Sacombank will know how to live with risks without losing direction. We are comprehensively upgrading our internal management system - not only based on control, but also on appropriate response.

The key is not to see the risk – it’s to sense the pulse of the risk before it hits the system. We will invest heavily in early data analytics, build “trust buffers” and, crucially, train people not to obsess over metrics but to stick to principles.

Sacombank has a new CEO, is it enough or does it need any deep changes in the organization?

Restructuring is not about “cutting - patching - replacing”. It is about re-energizing the organization - both in terms of trust, motivation, and soft organizational structure. We start by redefining the ‘gravity zones’ of each functional block - where creativity is needed, where discipline is needed, where connection is needed.

Next is to re-establish the value system: maintain the service principle, but renew the approach. In particular, I want to inspire every bank officer: not just an operator - but a person who shapes every financial heartbeat of the country.

What is your message as the new CEO of Sacombank?

A bank may not be remembered much for what it did in the past, but it will be remembered more for what it committed to in the future.
