In early March 2025, the People's Committee of Krong Pa district issued Decision No. 17/QD-UBND on approving the economic -technical report on investment in the construction of the project to expand the Main Canal and the N33 Canal to supply water to the extended N33 Canal of the Ia Mlah Irrigation Project. The project is implemented in Chu Gu commune. The goal of the project is to expand these canals to serve the water needs of residential areas and proactively provide irrigation water for agricultural production. According to the approved report, the investment scale includes the expansion of the Main Canal (total length of about 1.5 km) and the N33 Canal (total length of about 250m) along with works on the canal such as road culverts, canal bridge culverts, U-shaped steel trough culverts... The total investment of the project is more than 5.2 billion VND. The investment capital is determined from additional funding (compensated by Thanh Nguyen Energy Investment and Development One Member Co., Ltd. with more than 3.5 billion VND) and the budget of Krong Pa district. The project will be implemented in 20255 by the Krong Pa District Investment and Construction Project Management Board as the investor.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Khoi - Director of the Krong Pa District Construction Investment Project Management Board said: "Currently, the construction unit is speeding up the construction progress of the project. It is expected that by the end of June 2025, the project will be completed and put into use. The construction solution is to take advantage of the existing old Main Canal section, adding a new canal running close to the old canal to supply water to the extended N33 canal. This method helps save investment costs, ensure safety for the project and increase the ability to proactively regulate water."

Chu Gu field (Chu Gu commune) has an area of nearly 100 hectares, which is the main production area of people in To Nia, Chu Bang, Chu Jut villages and the 4+5 Group. However, because the water canal system from Ia Mlah irrigation is small at the end of the canal, the amount of water is very little in the winter-spring crop. Every year, water shortages often occur, causing difficulties for many farming households in the area. Mr. Ksor Da - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Chu Bang village - said: "My family has more than 0.5 hectares of rice fields, but the water source is often lacking, so production is very unstable. This year, the State invested in expanding the water canal, so people are proactive in production, so they are very happy."

According to Mr. Ksor Nhòi - Chairman of the People's Committee of Chu Gu commune, previously people only produced using water from the Chu Gu pumping station but the efficiency was not high due to unstable water. Since 2010, the Ia Mlah irrigation project has been put into use, water has begun to be brought to Chu Gu fields. However, the canal system is too small, leading to insufficient water supply, many areas falling into drought. "Upgrading the water canal this time is very practical, helping people to be proactive in production, especially in increasingly harsh climate conditions. When completed, the project will ensure stable irrigation water for about 180 hectares of crops, including 100 hectares of double-crop rice and 80 hectares of other crops" - Mr. Ksor Nhòi said.

In Krong Pa district, there are currently 8 irrigation works including: 3 reservoirs, 4 dams and 1 electric pumping station. These works have a total designed irrigation area of 1,565 hectares, including 1,085 hectares of rice and 480 hectares of short-term industrial crops. Notably, the district also has the Ia Mlah irrigation work managed by Gia Lai Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd., with an irrigation capacity of up to 5,150 hectares of crops. This is an important source of water supply, contributing to maintaining stable production in the specific climatic conditions of Krong Pa, where the weather is hot and dry, rainfall is low and unevenly distributed.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Vo Ngoc Chau - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Krong Pa district said: "In the coming time, localities will continue to review and propose investment in upgrading, dredging and expanding more intra-field canals to reduce water loss and increase irrigation area. The goal is to ensure stable irrigation water, contributing to increasing income and sustainable poverty reduction for people. In addition, we also encourage people to apply water-saving irrigation measures, convert crops suitable to land and climate conditions, to reduce pressure on the irrigation system, towards sustainable agriculture and higher adaptation to natural disasters and climate change".
