The 2025 Asia University Rankings by the prestigious Times HigherEducation (THE) magazine has just been officially announced. Accordingly, this year, Vietnam has 9 higher education institutions included in this ranking.
Ranked 136th for the first time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) has surpassed many veteran names, including Ton Duc Thang University, to take the lead among Vietnamese universities in this prestigious ranking. This is also the first time a Vietnamese university has achieved such a high ranking according to THE's assessment.

Expressing his joy, Professor Nguyen Dong Phong, Chairman of the UEH Council, said that this achievement also helped UEH officially complete one of the key goals set for the 2025 - 2045 period "to be in the Top 250 leading universities in Asia by 2030 and Top 150 by 2045".
"This not only shows the strong efforts of the UEH collective but also once again affirms the multi-sectoral, multi-field and sustainable development strategy that UEH has been implementing," Mr. Phong emphasized.
This year, Ton Duc Thang University recorded a slight drop to the 201-250 group compared to position 193 in 2024. Meanwhile, Duy Tan University maintained its ranking of 251-300. Notably, Hanoi Medical University appeared in the 401-500 group, although it was not on the list in 2024.
Three other universities, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City Open University and Hanoi National University, are in the 501-600 group. Hue University and Ho Chi Minh City National University are in the 601+ group of leading universities in Asia in 2025.
Evaluation criteria in the 2025 ranking
- Research quality (Research quality – 30%): Citation impact, research strength, research excellence, research influence.
- Research environment (Research environment – 28%): Research reputation, research income, research productivity.
- Teaching (Teaching – 24.5%): Teaching reputation, lecturer/student ratio, PhD/bachelor ratio, PhD/lecturer ratio, organization income.
- R&D, applied intellectual property (Industry – 10%): Income from R&D, applied intellectual property.
- International outlook (7.5%): International student ratio, international faculty ratio, international cooperation.
