"Vietnamese is a precious asset of the Vietnamese people, the crystallization of thousands of years of history of building and defending the country, of labor and development," said Ms. Le Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs , Chairwoman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, on September 8 at the Workshop summarizing the implementation of the Plan for Honoring Vietnamese Language in the Overseas Vietnamese Community in 2023.
Also attending the Workshop combining both in-person and online formats were Mr. Trieu Tai Vinh, Deputy Head of the Central Committee for Mass Mobilization, 80 delegates representing ministries, departments, branches, central and local agencies; experts, lecturers on language and culture and overseas Vietnamese from 50 connecting points in many countries.
According to Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang: "For the strongly growing overseas Vietnamese community with nearly 6 million people living in over 130 countries and territories around the world , Vietnamese is a means of preserving and transmitting culture.
Vietnamese helps our compatriots abroad preserve their own cultural identity, confidently develop and integrate with the world. Vietnamese is also a loving bridge connecting Vietnamese compatriots around the world with each other and with the Fatherland."
The workshop summarized and evaluated the results of organizing activities related to the Vietnamese Language Honor Day 2023 by ministries, departments, branches, localities and relevant parties at home and abroad.
Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that along with the work of preserving and promoting national cultural identity, the work of Vietnamese language has always received deep attention from our Party and State, which has been affirmed as a consistent policy and stated as a specific task in directive documents.
According to the Deputy Minister, in recent times, the work of preserving and promoting the Vietnamese language in the overseas Vietnamese community has achieved many important results.
However, in the trend of globalization and international integration, Vietnamese language faces the risk of fading away, gradually losing its purity when the young generation born and raised abroad is influenced and impacted by the local culture.
The project of Honoring Vietnamese Language in the NVNONN community approved by the Prime Minister in August 2022 can be considered a breakthrough in this work, creating an important driving force to promote teaching and learning activities and meet the aspirations and practical needs of the community.
2023 is the first year of implementing the Project, marking the milestone with activities to honor the Vietnamese language being carried out synchronously and widely both domestically and internationally, with the cooperation and active participation of departments, ministries, branches, organizations, businesses and especially our compatriots abroad.
The project has become an event that attracts the NVNONN community, creating a spreading effect of the noble values of the national language and culture.
At the workshop, delegates listened to 10 presentations from representatives of ministries; agencies, organizations; experts; representatives of representative agencies and overseas Vietnamese in various countries.
The presentations clearly stated the implementation of activities to honor the Vietnamese language in 2023; advantages and difficulties in preserving the Vietnamese language abroad; and proposed specific directions to effectively implement the Project on Honoring the Vietnamese Language in the Vietnamese Community in 2024.

In 2023, activities to implement the Vietnamese Language Honor Day in the NVNONN community received positive responses both domestically and internationally, with diverse forms and contents, creating a playground and exchange environment for overseas Vietnamese.
However, due to some objective reasons, the activities that have been and are being implemented are still limited in scale, location, and participants, and have not really met the requirements and objectives set out.
Mobilizing contributions and participation from individuals and businesses is also difficult in the current situation, so it cannot ensure stability and certainty in the implementation commitment of partners.
Delegates attending the workshop also pointed out many practical difficulties and challenges abroad, such as the need to develop curriculum and train volunteer teachers to teach Vietnamese, which must be diverse and suitable for each locality, and limited support resources.
In particular, the biggest barrier to teaching Vietnamese language to children of Vietnamese people abroad is the lack of motivation to learn.
Speaking at the Workshop, Mr. Mai Phan Dung, Vice Chairman of the State Committee on Overseas Vietnamese, proposed a number of solutions and recommendations to effectively implement the Plan for Honoring Vietnamese Language in the Overseas Vietnamese Community in 2024.
According to him, the solutions focus on addressing challenges in core groups of issues such as: Firstly, it is necessary to create an attractive learning environment, rich in content and form to create a foundation for the community to connect, share and foster love for Vietnamese, especially in the young generation of NVNONN.
Second , it is necessary to diversify and innovate Vietnamese language teaching materials by taking advantage of digital platforms, applying technology, calling for cooperation and support in terms of financial resources and creativity of overseas Vietnamese intellectuals in the NVNONN community around the world to meet the needs of target groups and localities.
Third , improve the quality of teachers, teaching methods, training in teaching and learning Vietnamese for overseas Vietnamese in terms of teaching methods, knowledge of Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture and history through direct and online forms.
On the other hand, it is necessary to continue to organize direct training in the area, with research and adjustments suitable to the characteristics of each area.
Fourth , strengthen the implementation of propaganda work, posting information on many platforms and media channels to widely spread to the public both domestically and internationally about activities to honor the Vietnamese language in the Vietnamese Community of Overseas Vietnamese.
The goal of this is to create a positive impact, help spread the love of Vietnamese, and improve Vietnamese teaching and learning activities in the NVNONN community.
