The harvest season of dong leaves in Vinh Phuc village starts from December 13 to 28.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai's family (Vinh Phuc village) has dedicated their entire garden of more than 500 square meters to growing dong leaves. During this time, traders are coming to buy large quantities to sell to banh chung wrapping establishments or to small traders at the market, so Ms. Mai's family has to mobilize many people to harvest to deliver the goods on time.

“We are concentrating on harvesting and arranging dong leaves into bundles to export to traders. My family has sold more than 40,000 leaves. We plan to harvest and sell until the 28th of Tet and then take a break,” said Nguyen Thi Mai.

One person can harvest from 5 - 6,000 leaves/day.

It is known that this year the weather is favorable so the dong leaves are very beautiful, big, thick, so the price is higher than previous years. Currently, the selling price at the garden ranges from 55 - 60 thousand VND/100 large leaves, from 35 - 40 thousand VND/100 small leaves. According to estimates, each sao of dong leaves brings income to the people of Vinh Phuc village from 10 - 15 million VND.

Mr. Le Huy Dong's family (Vinh Phuc village) has over 1,000 m2 of dong leaves. It is expected that this time, his family will harvest nearly 50,000 leaves, earning over 25 million VND. Mr. Dong said: "Dong leaves do not require much care, but require growers to regularly clean the base leaves so that the tree can sprout many buds, have large, green, even, and beautiful leaves. In particular, dong leaves grow well under the shade of tall and dense trees."

Traders come to the house to buy dong leaves.

According to Mr. Le Huy Dong, dong leaves can be harvested twice a year, however, harvesting too much will cause the leaves to be small and unattractive. Therefore, most households in Vinh Phuc village usually only harvest once a year during Tet to maintain product quality.

Mr. Hoang Xuan Quang, Head of Vinh Phuc village, said: "Dong leaves do not need much care. After each harvest, people just clean up the grass, dry leaves at the base and then fertilize with a little phosphate and nitrogen fertilizer. The profession of growing dong leaves here has been passed down from generation to generation. This is also the main source of income for people during the Lunar New Year."
