In the context of deep integration, from the perspective of the cultural industry, traditional craft villages in the city will be clearly "positioned," promoting the creative economy and spreading cultural values beyond Vietnam's borders.

The foundation of the creative economy

In the context of the cultural industry, handicraft products from traditional craft villages in Da Nang are present in many countries and territories.

These exquisite products have established a foothold in the international market, from handicraft fairs in Europe to America, and regular export orders, demonstrating the appeal of Vietnamese culture in general, and Da Nang in particular.

The products of the city's craft villages not only play an important role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage but also become a key economic sector, contributing to boosting export growth and sustainable economic development.

Da Nang currently boasts a large force of artisans who are the "soul" of activities in its traditional craft villages. With their exquisite craftsmanship and extensive professional knowledge, these artisans have contributed to maintaining the uniqueness, cultural value, and vitality of these villages. They play a leading role in training, guiding, and passing on their skills to the next generation of artisans, ensuring the continuity and development of these centuries-old traditions.

Challenges in integration

Recounting his experience participating in international trade fairs, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Director of the Trade Promotion Center ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), assessed that handicraft products from across the country in general, and Da Nang city in particular, have affirmed their attractiveness and made a deep impression on international visitors. Despite the development of modern technology and AI, these handcrafted products, deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, possess a special charm that makes customers want to explore and experience them firsthand.

According to Mr. Tien, alongside the achievements, it is necessary to frankly acknowledge the obstacles facing handicrafts. Traditional products are very valuable but lack practical application or have not been optimized in terms of size and design to be suitable as gifts or for daily use in the international market. Overly bulky products, such as stone or wooden statues, are unlikely to win over international customers who prioritize convenience and streamlined aesthetics.

In the context of integration, international visitors have increasingly more opportunities to visit the city's traditional craft villages.

However, the development of craft villages in conjunction with tourism in Da Nang still faces many limitations and remains largely spontaneous.

There are few craft villages associated with tourist destinations, and there are no tourist sites large enough to serve tours showcasing and demonstrating traditional crafts.

The weak links between craft villages, travel agencies, and local authorities reduce the effectiveness of craft village tourism activities.

The transportation system connecting tourist destinations and craft villages is not yet convenient; essential infrastructure at tourist sites such as parking lots, reception areas, and public restrooms are not yet adequate to serve tourists.

A new path forward for traditional craft villages.

Developing traditional craft villages within the context of cultural industries and deep integration is not only an economic challenge but also a responsibility to preserve Da Nang's cultural identity.

According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, a comprehensive strategy is needed for Da Nang's handicraft products to reach the global market.

Products need to be designed to meet practical needs. Compact, convenient items that still retain a unique style will be more easily accessible to the market.

Packaging needs to be not only aesthetically pleasing but also aligned with global trends and meet the expectations of international customers. Translating and optimizing information on packaging is crucial for attracting foreign customers.

Combining in-person experiences at trade fairs with online promotion through digital platforms will help expand customer reach.

Cultural narratives associated with products need to be conveyed vividly and creatively, creating trends that attract attention.

Today's customers often spend only a few seconds deciding whether they are interested in handicrafts, so the product story needs to be concise, engaging, and emotionally resonant.

According to Mr. Trinh Quoc Dat, Chairman of the Vietnam Handicraft Village Association, for Da Nang's handicraft products to have a place in integration, artisans need to use technology to process raw materials, ensuring safety and increasing productivity; while preserving the essence of craftsmanship, which is the stage that expresses the technique and cultural soul of the product.

“The government needs to provide preferential capital, land, and infrastructure support to connect craft villages and attract tourists. Craft villages need to apply new technologies while still preserving traditional patterns and styles. Exports of craft village products should be expanded through international e-commerce channels,” Mr. Dat said.

In the context of integration and the flow of industrial and cultural activities, Da Nang's traditional craft villages face challenges but also open up many opportunities for sustainable development.

With the inherent strength and aspirations of the artisans to develop traditional crafts that have existed for hundreds of years, combined with government support, the city's craft villages will rise to become the soul of the rural economy, spreading national cultural identity to the international market.
