On December 9, the leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party Friedrich Merz, who is leading in the race to become the country's next Prime Minister, arrived in Kiev to discuss with Ukrainian leaders how to deal with Russia's special military campaign.

Mr. Merz stressed the desire to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict as soon as possible to restore peace in Europe, and pledged the conservative alliance's support for Kiev's leaders.
The head of the CDU party has taken a tougher line on Russia than Chancellor Olaf Scholz, saying Germany should provide long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, a weapon the country has long requested in case Moscow continues to attack civilian infrastructure.
“If our support for Ukraine weakens, the conflict will last longer. If that support is consistent, the conflict will end quickly,” Mr. Merz stressed.
The conflict in Ukraine is becoming one of the top election campaign issues ahead of early elections in Germany, scheduled for February 23 after the collapse of Chancellor Scholz's ruling coalition.
The long-planned visit by the leader of Germany's conservative opposition party comes a week after Chancellor Scholz's surprise trip to Ukraine.
