Rory McIlroy takes the lead after round 3 of The Masters.

Veteran CBS commentator Jim Nantz had it right during his commentary of the third round of The Masters at Augusta National: Rory McIlroy was playing like a maniac, as he quickly rose to the top of the leaderboard and never looked back.

McIlroy started round 3 with 2 strokes behind Justin Rose. But the Northern Irishman did not take long to break away, birdie, eagle and birdie on the first 3 holes to surpass his Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose and take the lead.

And the 35-year-old's explosive performance didn't stop there. McIlroy made history at The Masters by becoming the first golfer to open a round with six consecutive holes of 3-putts, according to PGA Tour statistics.

“It was a great start, and you know, to start a round like that, especially after finishing the second round the afternoon before and having to wait until today to get back on the course – there was a lot of excitement and anxiety built up,” McIlroy told reporters. “You just want to get out there and play.”

Despite bogeys at holes 8 and 10, McIlroy kept his spirits up and even recorded a second eagle at hole 15 - the first time he has done this at a major in his career.

Bryson DeChambeau

The world No. 2 golfer parred the final three holes to finish Moving Day with a 6-under 66, repeating his performance from round two and taking sole possession of the lead with a total score of -12. McIlroy opened up a two-stroke lead before entering the final round with direct opponent Bryson DeChambeau (-10), who maintained his consistency with a 3-under 69 in round three.

It's been 11 years since McIlroy last won a major, and The Masters is the only major missing from his Career Grand Slam. If he wins, McIlroy will become the sixth player in history to complete the Career Grand Slam, joining legends like Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Corey Conners finished with a 70, finishing third at under-8, four strokes behind McIlroy. Justin Rose, the leader after round two, slipped to T6 at under-5 with a 75. Also in T6 was Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion and world No. 1, who shot a 72 in round three.
