Senior Lieutenant General Tran Quang Phuong, member of the Party Central Committee, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly; representatives of the General Department of Politics , Vietnam People's Army; Military Region 5; leaders of Quang Ngai province, agencies, organizations, veterans and a large number of people attended the ceremony.
Reading a speech reviewing the Ba Gia campaign, Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Giang said: On the night of May 28 and early morning of May 29, 1965, our troops opened fire and destroyed many enemy troops in the communes west of Son Tinh district. At 6:45 a.m., the enemy sent a company of Battalion 1 (Regiment 51) in Go Cao to explore, but we ambushed them, destroyed one platoon, and had to ask for reinforcements for the remaining two platoons. After 5 hours on the opening day of the campaign, we killed and wounded many, including two American advisors, captured hundreds of them (including Battalion Commander Captain Nguyen Van Ngoc), seized more than 200 guns, destroyed a 105mm cannon, 4 GMCs, and 1 Jeep. At the same time, we shelled the Go Cao post, causing many losses to the enemy.
On May 30, 1965, from Quang Ngai town, the enemy Battalion moved up to Tinh Ha commune, Son Tinh district and divided into two wings: One wing had the 39th Commando Battalion turn north of Phuoc Loc and follow Lam Loc - Vinh Khanh road to occupy Chop Non hill, forming a siege behind our formation, the other wing had the 2nd Battalion, 51st Regiment and the 3rd Marine Battalion advance along Highway 5 Son Tinh to Son Ha to disrupt and break our combat arrangement. At 2:10 p.m. on May 30, 1965, the entire enemy Battalion entered our combat formation.
The order to attack was passed down from all directions, our troops charged, surrounded, divided, isolated the two enemy wings, not allowing them to gather the strength of the Task Force. The enemy's commando battalion had just reached the Chop Non high point when it was immediately destroyed by our forces. The troops of the 2nd and 3rd Marine Battalions were attacked by our forces and had to stop at Phuoc Loc, Tinh Son commune. At 3:28 p.m. the same day, our firepower concentrated on Phuoc Loc, the enemy stubbornly relied on the existing trenches to resist. Enemy aircraft came to bombard and rescue their infantry but were ineffective. By 5:00 p.m., the marine battalion was almost completely destroyed by our troops. Battalion 2 also suffered heavy losses. Not giving the enemy time to consolidate, our troops quickly switched to night fighting. At dawn on May 31, 1965, our troops simultaneously attacked and defeated the remaining troops at Hill 47 and Chop Non Mountain.
In just 7 minutes, the remaining troops of the 3rd Marine Battalion were defeated and taken prisoner by our troops. After 42 hours of continuous fighting, the entire puppet mixed task force was completely destroyed. Thus, from dawn on May 29-31, 1965, in 3 days of continuous fighting, using various tactics, we destroyed and severely damaged 4 enemy battalions, breaking the major operation to relieve Ba Gia. This was the first time on the battlefield of Military Region 5 that a main regiment of ours destroyed an elite mixed task force of the enemy, killing 916 enemies, including 4 American advisors, capturing 65, and seizing 200 guns of various types.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province Nguyen Hoang Giang emphasized: "60 years have passed, but the glorious marks of a heroic struggle will never fade in the memories of every citizen of Son Tinh district and Quang Ngai province. Today's generation and future generations will never forget the simple and resilient children of Quang Ngai who stood shoulder to shoulder, creating extraordinary strength, destroying the enemy's elite forces. Promoting the patriotic tradition, the Party Committee, government and people of Quang Ngai will continue to improve the leadership capacity and fighting strength of the Party organization and the contingent of Party members and cadres; promote the strength of the entire political system, the great national unity bloc to well implement the Party's guidelines and resolutions, the State's policies and laws; and the local political tasks. Take advantage of all potentials and advantages to further accelerate the economic development speed towards increasing the proportion of industry and construction, especially attracting investment in the Industrial - Urban and Service Zones. VSIP; improve productivity, quality and value of agricultural products; accelerate the movement of "Building new rural areas"; continue to improve infrastructure...".
