Compared to films before the liberation of the South, the series of films made after 1975 no longer have a strong propaganda and calling for fighting spirit, but have a more contemplative and multi-dimensional perspective.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, a series of the best war-themed films will be screened for free within the framework of the 3rd Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) in 2025.

The film screening program, themed “Half a century of Vietnamese films about war,” screened 22 selected films produced after 1975. This was also an opportunity for the audience to meet and interact with artists and filmmakers.

Some familiar films include “The Wild Field” (Nguyen Hong Sen), “Ao Lua Ha Dong” (Luu Huynh), “Liberation of Saigon” (Long Van), “Hanoi 12 Days and Nights” (People’s Artist Bui Dinh Hac), “Living in Fear” (Bui Thac Chuyen), “Nga T-Dong Loc” (Luu Trong Ninh)... not showing films that are currently selling tickets in theaters such as “Tunnels: Sun in the Dark.”

Screening times, locations, and crew members will be specifically informed via the festival's website and social networking sites.

Associate Professor, Doctor Ngo Phuong Lan - representative of the festival's organizing committee commented that compared to films made during the war (before 1975), films made after the liberation of the South had a time gap to look back at the war. Filmmakers during this period contemplated the great values of heroic qualities, national pride and the price of sacrifices and losses.

“This is shown in films reflecting life in the early days of peace , in which the physical and mental wounds of war still bleed day and night. If during the war, filmmakers tended to reflect directly, many valuable works were born, but the common point was that the films were propaganda, encouraging the fighting spirit of the army and people, then after the country was unified, the films had a time gap for reflection. From there, there were films depicting the tragedy of war, the small, unfortunate fates; there were films of a general nature, containing the philosophy of life of the Vietnamese people,” she commented.

Also within the framework of this year's film festival, there will be a workshop on "Imprints of Vietnam's war films since the country's reunification." The workshop aims to comprehensively recognize and evaluate the achievements, values and position of war films in the flow of cinema, along with pointing out how films after the liberation of the South are different from wartime films.

DANAFF is an Asian-scale film event, held annually in Da Nang City, organized by the Vietnam Film Development Association (VFDA) in coordination with the People's Committee, the city's Department of Culture and a number of other units.

This year, the film festival takes place from June 29 to July 5 with the theme “DANAFF - Asian Bridge”, with many activities such as film screenings, short courses on acting, project markets, exhibitions, seminars, red carpet events…/.
