Regional linkage - Promoting green value chain in Vietnamese agriculture

Developing green value chains is an inevitable trend and a strategic task in the process of transforming agriculture towards modernity, efficiency and sustainability. Green value chains not only help reduce emissions and protect the environment, but also create a foundation to increase added value for agricultural products, build national brands and enhance competitiveness in the context of international markets increasingly demanding high standards.

On November 19, 2025, in Hanoi, Agriculture and Environment Magazine ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) organized a workshop with the theme "Regional linkage - Promoting green value chains in Vietnamese agriculture".

The workshop aims to exchange experiences, share solutions in planning - production - consumption, promote the application of green agricultural technology, develop sustainable markets and mobilize social resources for green value chains.

Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien said that Vietnamese agriculture plays a very important role in the economy and makes important contributions to food stability and development.

In the first 9 months of 2025, the total export value of Vietnam's agriculture, forestry and fishery products reached 52.31 billion USD, up 14% over the same period last year, showing a strong recovery of the agricultural sector in the context of many fluctuations in global trade. The trade balance of agriculture, forestry and fishery products in the 3 quarters reached a surplus of 15.93 billion USD, up 17.6% compared to 2024 - demonstrating the resilience and efforts of the entire industry, while approaching the target of 70 billion USD by 2025.

The country currently has more than 3,500 value chain linkage models, attracting 300,000 farming households through nearly 2,000 cooperatives and cooperative groups. About 70% of the models involve cooperatives as the focal point for organizing raw material areas, signing contracts, controlling quality and coordinating consumption. The total mobilized capital reached over VND20,000 billion, of which enterprises contributed 50-60%, reflecting the trend of risk sharing among entities in modern agricultural production.

However, the value chain linkage is not yet sustainable, not yet closed throughout the chain from production - processing - market; support procedures are still complicated; effectiveness is not uniform among localities. In addition, climate change is becoming more and more complex; the requirement to reduce emissions and protect the environment has become an inevitable trend; at the same time, the international market is constantly increasing strict standards on quality, origin and sustainability. These challenges require the agricultural sector to innovate comprehensively, not only at the local level but also at the regional and inter-regional levels, to form sustainable green value chains.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien emphasized: “The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment clearly identifies the importance of building and developing green value chains as an essential requirement, aiming to build an agriculture with low emissions and less damage to the environment. At the same time, strengthen regional linkages to develop circular agriculture.”

Speaking at the workshop , Dr. Dao Xuan Hung, Editor-in-Chief of the Agriculture and Environment Magazine, shared that developing green value chains is an inevitable trend and a strategic task in the process of transforming agriculture towards modernity, efficiency and sustainability. According to him, green value chains not only help reduce emissions and protect the environment, but also create a foundation to increase added value for agricultural products, build national brands and enhance competitiveness in the context of international markets increasingly demanding high standards.

Regional linkages will form concentrated and synchronized raw material areas; promote deep processing, optimize logistics and reduce post-harvest losses and are an important foundation for developing green value chains that will contribute to promoting agricultural production to reduce emissions; improve product quality and value through standardizing processes and traceability; expand export markets, especially high-end markets that prioritize sustainable products; develop a stable rural economy, increase farmers' income, and at the same time move closer to the goal of net zero emissions in the direction of sustainable development.

In   seminar,   Many in-depth discussions analyzed the key requirements for developing a green value chain in a practical and sustainable manner. Many opinions focused on clarifying the need to perfect the regional linkage mechanism, creating synchronous coordination between localities in planning, building raw material areas, sharing data and organizing production and consumption along the chain. In addition, the discussions emphasized the importance of standardizing quality standards and promoting traceability, considering this the key to helping Vietnamese agricultural products meet the increasingly stringent requirements of the international market, while improving the transparency and competitiveness of products.

Copper   During the meeting, experts exchanged and discussed ideas on perfecting important policies, contributing to orienting regional linkage models and promoting the green transformation of Vietnam's agricultural sector in the new context.
