The referee for the Conference League final has been revealed, making both teams nervous.

In the early morning of May 29, the focus of attention is now not only on the match between Chelsea and Real Betis in the Conference League final but also on referee Irfan Peljto.

The 40-year-old Bosnian referee has just been entrusted by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to referee the Conference League final. This is the first time he has had the honor of refereeing such an important club match.

However, this honor comes with a fair amount of concern from both Chelsea and Real Betis. Despite being ranked as an elite referee by UEFA, Irfan Peljto's record contains "blemishes" that make fans and experts worried about his qualifications.

In his home country of Bosnia alone, Peljto was suspended for six matches after refereeing a match with too many mistakes. Most notably, he missed two situations that should have clearly been awarded penalties. This directly affected the outcome of the match.

More recently, Irfan Peljto continued to be the focus of criticism in the first leg of the 2024 Champions League round of 16 between RB Leipzig and Real Madrid.

In the third minute, he refused to recognize a valid goal by Benjamin Sesko (Leipzig), although the subsequent slow-motion replays showed that Sesko was not offside. This controversial decision was based on the argument that Benjamin Henrichs (Sesko's teammate) interfered with Real Madrid goalkeeper Lunin.

This confusing whistle has caused outrage from Leipzig and received a series of harsh criticisms from former referees, famous players and international media, who said he had deprived the home team of an important goal.

With a history of controversial decisions and mistakes that have caused him to be suspended from the domestic tournament, Irfan Peljto's selection to referee the 2025 Conference League final is creating a lot of pressure on both teams.

Not only do both teams have to deal with their opponents on the pitch, they also have to prepare themselves for potentially controversial decisions from the "man in black" in the most important match of the season.
