The Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) from the Kursk bridgehead are advancing deep into Ukraine’s Sumy province at a very fast pace. Military Review reported today that the RFAF 155th Marine Brigade has taken control of the village of Andreyevka in Sumy province; located on the right flank of the RFAF’s advance. The nearby villages of Alekseyevka and Vladimirovka were also taken by the RFAF. Another nearby village, Konstantinovka, had been overrun by the RFAF's 40th Marine Brigade earlier. The Russian Defense Ministry announced their control of Alekseyevka yesterday.
Russia's Rybar channel reported that by the evening of June 1, the village of Kondratovka in Sumy Oblast was under Russian control. The capture of Kindrativka came a few days after the village of Kostyantynivka, located to the north, was overrun by the RFAF's 40th Marine Brigade. Please note that from the village of Kindrativka to the northern outskirts of the city of Sumy is about 19 km as the crow flies. Earlier, the Russian army took control of the village of Oleksiivka; from this village to the northern outskirts of the city of Sumy is only 18 km as the crow flies. After taking control of the village of Andreyevka, located between Oleksiivka and Kindrativka, if the Ukrainians are unable to hold back the RFAF advance, the Russians will be able to cut directly to the N-07 road, which curves in the Pysarivka area and runs north to south, to the Kovpakovsky district of Sumy. According to Readovka, in the last week of May, the RFAF Northern Group managed to break through the defenses of the Ukrainian Army (AFU) on the southern outskirts of the village of Loknya and began the battle for Yunakovka. This could be the main target of the first stage of the Northern Group’s Sumy offensive. On the way of the advance, the AFU was driven out of the neighboring villages of Konstantinovka, Vladimirovka and Vodolaga. This meant that the RFAF reached the core of the AFU defense line on the Sumy border, passing through the chain of villages Oleksiivka - Novonikolayevka - Varachyne - Yablunivka - Yunakivka.
According to the analysis, the RFAF is unlikely to be ready to launch a large-scale attack here, their main target at this stage is Yunakivka. It is important to note that behind this village there are fields and a large forest. If the RFAF captures Yunakivka, it will open the way for them to advance into the rear of the entire Ukrainian defense line at the Sumy border and will directly threaten their reserve defense line located in the Khotin - Pysarivka - Korchakivka - Nova Sich - Khrapivshchyna strip. These villages are all located north of the H07 highway from Sudzha (Russia) to the city of Sumy (Ukraine). The vast forests on the Sumy border give the RFAF a significant tactical advantage. Due to the lack of manpower, the AFU would not be able to cover the approaches to the forest without support from the villages. The AFU here does not have enough field fortifications and the dense forest significantly reduces the ability to use FPV UAVs. All of this increases the RFAF’s chances of breaking into Sumy, or at least encircling enemy operations. The AFU Northern Group of Forces, responsible for the Chernihiv and Sumy regions, understands the urgency of the situation. They can respond by making another attempt to break into Russian territory, in order to disperse their forces and draw Russian troops away from the attack on Yunakovka. The Military Summary channel reported that units of the RFAF Northern Group of Forces continued to successfully complete the task of establishing a security buffer zone in the Sumy region. In the past two days alone, Russian troops have taken control of two densely populated areas, Oleksiivka and Kindrativka. Thus, the prerequisites have been created for an RFAF attack on the important village of Khotin, about 4 km away. According to war correspondents, RFAF Northern Group units are currently trying to push Ukrainian troops out of Yunakivka. Fierce fighting is currently taking place south of the village. Taking and holding control of the village is strategically important, as the occupation of the wooded hills north of Yunakivka will help the Russians strengthen their left flank and gain momentum for a further breakthrough.
A day earlier, the RVvoenkory channel reported major losses of the 103rd AFU Territorial Defense Brigade near the villages of Vodolahy, Novomykolaivka and Yablunivka in the Sumy border area. Currently, the AFU General Staff is trying to reinforce the Sumy front by sending the 31st border guard unit from the border of Ukraine's Chernivtsi Oblast with Moldova; but to no avail. The Ukrainian Deep State channel reported that Russian troops had advanced south of the N-07 road leading to Sumy and further to Kiev; thanks to continuous offensive operations, the RFAF finally deprived the Ukrainian army of its transport and logistics center at Yunakovka. The southern exit of H-07, which expanded the zone of control in the northeast of the Sumy region and at the same time cut off the shortest transport route between the AFU units in Yunakovka and Sadky. Despite the fact that in both of these villages there were also remnants of the former AFU units, defeated in the Kursk region and retreating to the designated areas.
The AFU has now lost control of the eastern part of Yunakovka – on the left bank of the Loknya River. The cutting of the N-07 road also means that Yunakovka will officially lose its status as a transport and logistics hub for the AFU; a place they could once again use to reach the border with the Sudzhansky district of Russia’s Kursk Oblast. At the same time, the assault groups of the RFAF Northern Group, supported by artillery fire and FPV UAVs, are advancing northwest of Yunakivka; fighting is taking place in the area of the village of Yablunivka. If the RFAF “breaks through” Yablunivka, it will also cut off Yunakivka from the west. According to the Ukrainian channel Deep State, fierce battles are still taking place in the border area of Sumy, bordering Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
