The number of foreign visitors to Japan in January increased 79.5% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching about 2.69 million, equivalent to the level of January 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak.
According to a report released by the Japanese government on February 21, the number of foreign tourists has increased since late April 2023, when Japan lifted border controls related to the COVID-19 epidemic. The weak yen also helped increase the number of foreign tourists to Japan.
The powerful earthquake that shook central Japan on New Year's Day 2024 did not have much of an impact on tourism, although some South Korean and Chinese tourists canceled their trips to Japan after the quake, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.
By country and territory, South Korea had the largest number of visitors to Japan with 857,000 arrivals, up 10% compared to January 2019, followed by Taiwan (China) with 492,300 arrivals (up 27%), and China with 415,900 arrivals (down 44.9%).
The number of Japanese people traveling abroad in January increased by 89.3% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 838,600, but was still 42.3% lower than January 2019./.
