Plane tire burst, stuck on runway for 14 hours

The plane's tire burst incident left the airport with only one runway to operate, causing a chain reaction as many other flights were delayed.

A 5-star Etihad Airways plane with a blown tire was stuck on the runway for 14 hours at Melbourne Airport, Australia on Sunday afternoon.

Etihad confirmed that the 6.15pm flight to Abu Dhabi on 5 January was denied take-off due to “technical reasons”. Two of the plane’s tyres were damaged, meaning the Boeing 787-9 could not be towed off the runway until repairs were completed on site.

Melbourne Airport told news.com.au on Monday morning that the 289 passengers on board had safely disembarked on Sunday evening and were shuttled back to the terminal, but the plane remained on the tarmac.

In an update this morning, Melbourne Airport said the plane had finally been safely towed off the runway, after 14 hours on the ground.

"The inspection is complete and the runway has been reopened for operations," the airport representative said.

As a result, flights that were disrupted due to lack of runways are ready to fly again. However, these flights depart with less fuel and will need to refuel on the way to their final destination.

The Australian Air Fire and Rescue Service deployed firefighting foam as a precaution on Sunday when Etihad Airways flight EY461 requested assistance.

A passenger said the plane "had to brake hard while trying to take off" after two tyres burst.

"The crew decided to take off due to technical reasons and emergency services were on hand as a precaution. The safety and comfort of our customers and crew remains our highest priority," Etihad said in a statement.

Flight tracker shows that Etihad flight EY461 has not yet announced a new departure time.
