Studying at the continuingeducation center, Quang Anh ranked 2nd in Gio Linh district, with a university entrance exam score of 27.76 in this year's national high school graduation exam.

Receiving the news that he was admitted to the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence major at the University of Technology (University of Danang), Nguyen Duc Quang Anh was very happy.

But the happiest is grandmother Pham Thi Dieu, 82 years old, who has worked hard to raise Anh and her four children for the past 15 years. “I am very happy. My youngest grandchild is now in college, but I am old and weak, have no garden, and cannot make any money,” said Mrs. Dieu.

Quang Anh was born in 2000, 6 years older than her classmates. I thought Anh had to retake the exam many years ago, but this was Anh's first high school graduation exam.

“I dropped out of school for 6 years after 8th grade, partly because my grandmother was poor, my parents died early and there was no one to guide me, and I was addicted to playing games. During my time off school, I worked part-time as a incense maker and played games for others,” Anh said.

At the age of 19, thinking about his future and his elderly grandmother, Anh asked to go back to 8th grade. The teachers at the middle school knew his situation and welcomed Anh. "I was also shy because I was older than my friends, but I was determined to overcome it," he told the program "Tiep suc den truong".

Because she was too old to enter high school, Anh studied at the Center for Vocational Education and Continuing Education in Gio Linh district (Quang Tri).

Ms. Hoang Thi Kim Dung - deputy director of the center - said that Anh is a special student, older in age so she is often teased by her classmates.

However, Anh studied much better than her friends, she was an excellent student for 3 years. In this national high school graduation exam, Anh ranked 2nd in Gio Linh district, with a university entrance score of 27.76.

“Anh is very hard-working, diligent, obedient, studious, and responsible. We sometimes ask Anh to tutor her classmates and teachers' children.

The center has a low input quality, failing new general schools in continuing education. Anh became a bright spot. We hope to have more students like Anh,” said Ms. Kim Dung.

While studying in high school, Anh also tutored math for two children, earning 1 million VND/month. He saved up to buy a "broken down" motorbike worth 1 million VND to get around. Anh also plans to tutor during his upcoming studies.

A lifetime of raising 4 orphaned grandchildren, a nearly 90-year-old grandmother 'hopes society will save her grandchildren'

Grandmother Pham Thi Dieu said that in 2002, when Anh was 2 years old, her father (a teacher) died in a traffic accident while proctoring an exam. Seven years later, Anh's mother left behind 4 siblings and passed away from stomach cancer after a long period of treatment in Thua Thien Hue and Ho Chi Minh City.

Anh and her three older siblings were taken in by their grandmother and sheltered in a cramped, unplastered, ground-floor house. Anh’s eldest sister was born with a disability in her limbs and could not walk. In 2007, Mrs. Dieu sold chickens and ducks, saved up 4 million VND to buy materials, and then asked her children and grandchildren to help build the house. The tiny house only had a living room in the front and a bedroom just big enough for a single bed.

The five of them lay sideways on the rickety bed. Mrs. Dieu said the bed collapsed countless times, then it was completely broken and they spread a mat on the floor.

In 2012 and 2014, two organizations provided money to build two more rooms on either side. The three adjacent rooms, built piecemeal over the years, became a shelter for five grandmothers and grandchildren.

Mrs. Dieu bought potatoes to sell at the market, planted cassava and purple potatoes, and when the season came, she gleaned rice, caught crabs and snails... to make a living.

“My grandmother and I are so miserable that it is beyond words. Luckily, people sympathize with us, and give us a little bit so that our children can study well. When we buy 50,000 VND worth of rice, they give us a few cans. When we eat 5,000 VND worth of porridge at the market, a masked woman pays for it. I don’t know who paid for it. I remember all the strangers who helped my grandmother and me,” said Mrs. Dieu.

Now, Mrs. Dieu is no longer strong enough to go to the market. She and her disabled eldest granddaughter receive a monthly subsidy of more than 1.4 million VND from the State.

Mrs. Dieu's final wish in life is for her youngest grandchild Quang Anh to follow in the footsteps of her two older siblings, complete university, and become a good person. "Please help and save me so I can overcome this hardship. I really want my grandchild to go to school. By the time he graduates, I will be almost 90 years old, I will be satisfied," Mrs. Anh smiled.

Sitting next to her grandmother, Anh said: “If I didn’t have a scholarship, I would still try to go to school. It’s not easy to give up my dream. Partly because there are many people who want me to study, and I really want to access human knowledge.”
