Billionaire Musk's mother accused of racism against Vietnamese-American reporter

Maye Musk, a model and mother of billionaire Elon Musk, has been accused of racism for criticizing a Vietnamese-American reporter.

On the day of the US election, November 5th, Elon Musk's mother, Maye Musk, posted on her son's company's X account (formerly Twitter), a post criticizing Ryan Mac, a Vietnamese-American technology reporter for The New York Times.

"I heard @RMac18 (Ryan Mac's account) is going to have a hit article about Elon in The New York Times tomorrow. Sadly, Ryan is a Vietnamese-American reporter. My book is a bestseller in Vietnam. I don't think my readers will believe that article if it's hateful and/or untruthful. We'll see," Maye Musk wrote, according to The Independent. Although the post was deleted, many people quickly took screenshots and shared them on X. Many accounts criticized Elon Musk's mother for mentioning Ryan Mac's race. "The fact is, Ryan Mac was born and raised in California. But that doesn't matter. Attacking a reporter because of their ethnic heritage is never appropriate," wrote NBC News reporter Tyler Kingkade. Several other accounts also jumped in to comment, criticizing Maye Musk's "distorted and sad" viewpoint and her "always promoting racism." Another person argued that criticizing someone because of their skin color is completely unacceptable. According to The New York Times, Ryan Mac identifies himself as a Los Angeles-based reporter specializing in technology companies and has years of experience covering influential figures like Elon Musk. In September, he and a colleague released the book "Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter," which details the billionaire's takeover of the social media platform Twitter (now renamed X). After being called out, Ryan Mac responded with a status update on November 6th: "Is anyone else doing anything about Vietnamese Americans tonight?" He also updated his profile description on X, adding "Vietnamese American." Maye Musk subsequently defended herself. " The New York Times has been lying about Elon for the past 15 years. Nothing new. It must be hard to continue the animosity and dishonesty. Hopefully Ryan gets paid well," she wrote. Maye Musk (76 years old) is a nutritionist and professional model who has appeared on the covers of many magazines. She published a book on fitness, nutrition, and self-confidence in 1996 and a memoir in 2019. It is unclear which book she was referring to as a bestseller in Vietnam.
