Microsoft removed the iconic blue screen of death, what does it look like now?

This change was introduced in the Windows 11 24H2 preview version.

The BSOD is a famous error screen that most Windows users have encountered at least once. It is recognized by its bright blue color, sad face icon, and simple error message "An error has occurred".

However, in the new design, Microsoft has removed the green color and replaced it with a completely black color. For the test versions for Windows Insiders, the error screen will be green.

Other elements have also been tweaked, as well. The sad face icon and QR code have been removed. QR codes have been added to BSODs since 2016 on Windows 10 to guide users to relevant troubleshooting tips. The text has also been simplified, displaying the message "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart", which is shorter and less confusing.

The word "device" is used instead of "PC" to cover more devices, not just desktops and laptops. The specific reason for the problem and the error code are shown at the bottom in a smaller font size.

Microsoft is said to have been working on this new system error screen since the beginning of Windows 11 development, but may have delayed or ignored it until now. The exact reason for the change is unclear, but it's possible that Microsoft wanted to get rid of the iconic image of the blue error screen, which is often associated with Windows update issues.

It's not clear when the new system error screen will be rolled out to the public version of Windows 11.
