Microsoft plans to spend $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to build AI data centers, showing the massive level of investment that AI requires.
In a blog post on January 3, Microsoft President Brad Smith said that more than half of the $80 billion will be spent in the United States. He also credited recent AI advances to “large-scale infrastructure investments that serve as an essential foundation for AI innovation.”
“Today, the United States leads the global AI race thanks to private investment and innovation from companies of all sizes, from dynamic startups to established businesses,” the blog reads.
At the same time, he called on the Trump administration to protect America's position in the field of AI through education and promoting AI technology to the world.
Cloud infrastructure providers like Microsoft and Amazon are racing to expand computing capacity by building new data centers.
In the previous fiscal year (ending June 2024), the Windows maker's capital expenditures were more than $50 billion, much of it poured into building server farms to serve AI needs.
The Microsoft president pointed out that the US needs “a realistic export control policy that balances the security of AI components in trusted data centers with the ability of businesses to rapidly scale and provide reliable supplies to US allies and friends.”
A significant amount of the money will be spent on high-end chips from companies like Nvidia and infrastructure providers like Dell, according to Bloomberg . AI server farms require a lot of energy, prompting Microsoft, Amazon, and Google to sign nuclear power agreements.
