On May 20, Thu Duc City Hospital organized a workshop on “Update on advances in lung cancer treatment” to discuss and share professional experience in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. The workshop was attended by medical experts and scientists from various countries, discussing in-depth about lung cancer.
Dr. Vu Tri Thanh, Deputy Director of Thu Duc City Hospital, said that lung cancer or bronchial cancer is a malignant tumor that develops from the epithelium of the bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli or from the glands of the alveoli. In the world , lung cancer is at the top of the list of common cancers in terms of both new cases and mortality rates.
Doctor Vu Tri Thanh, Deputy Executive Director of Thu Duc City Hospital, spoke at the conference.
In our country, lung cancer ranks second after liver cancer, with about 23,600 new cases and 20,700 deaths each year. Some factors that increase the risk of lung cancer for patients are smoking, environmental pollution, occupations related to radiation or asbestos, and genetic factors.
Today, with advances in medicine, the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of lung cancer have improved. Early detection combined with timely treatment can give patients a chance for a successful recovery.
In his report, Dr. Nguyen Trieu Vu, Head of the Oncology Department of Thu Duc City Hospital, gave statistics showing that lung cancer will continue to increase over time, by 2040 there will be 28.9 million cases and 16.2 million deaths worldwide.
Medical experts and scientists from many countries participated in sharing at the workshop.
Dr. Vu said that screening for lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer is still sporadic, people do not pay attention and there is no synchronous program. In addition, screening for lung cancer by low-dose CT is not currently covered by insurance, while it is one of the important screening methods for this disease.
"Currently, chemotherapy is still the most common treatment method. The rate of lung cancer patients surviving after 5 years in Vietnam is 14.8%," Dr. Vu added.
To prevent lung cancer, experts recommend that people do not use tobacco, avoid agents from radiation, asbestos, arsenic, air pollution; eat moderately with a scientific diet, increase exercise. As soon as the body shows abnormal signs, go to medical facilities for examination.
