Peacocks, with their colorful feathers, have appeared on the Bao Loc plateau ( Lam Dong province). A large peacock farm, with hundreds of colorful peacocks, is providing a stable source of income for a young farmer.

Minh Dieu Peacock Farm, Phan Huy Chu Street, B'Lao Ward, Bao Loc City is in sunny days, the time when male peacocks show off their colorful feathers.

Mr. Vu Tien Dat, owner of Minh Dieu farm, shared that the farm was formed in 2018, initially mainly out of hobby.

Mr. Dat recalls that year, he participated in several groups raising peacocks and pheasants.

Seeing that no one in Bao Loc had raised peacocks, he bought a small flock of one male and three females to try raising them. Starting with four breeding peacocks, Minh Dieu peacock farm now has 300 male and female peacocks.

Mr. Vu Tien Dat commented that female peacocks are slow breeders, laying only about 30 eggs a year. He said that for peacocks to reproduce, the timing between male and female peacocks needs to be coordinated.

Because every year, male peacocks have a moulting season from April to May.

During that time, the male peacock does not mate, and the female peacock lays eggs but they do not form embryos and cannot hatch.

By October, the male peacock has fully grown thicker, more beautiful feathers.

The female peacock breeds from February to June every year, laying only 30 eggs a year. Mr. Dat incubates those eggs artificially, with a hatching rate of about 70%.

"During the breeding season, peacocks are very afraid of noise. If there is noise such as vehicles or machines, peacocks may stop laying eggs and mating. Therefore, peacock farms need to be kept quiet during the breeding season," said Mr. Tien Dat.

Mr. Vu Tien Dat, owner of a peacock farm, a rare bird farm in Bao Loc City (Lam Dong Province) is checking a male peacock.

Mr. Tien Dat said that peacock eggs take 26 days to hatch, and are larger than duck eggs. After hatching, the peacocks are raised in cages and given careful care.

Baby peacocks are tiny, black, and misshapen. By the time they are six months old, care is easier and survival rates are higher.

According to Mr. Dat, small peacocks are raised in cages, divided by age for easy care. Large peacocks are raised on the floor, with a layer of dry rice husks on the floor to keep them warm and to avoid injuring their feet. As for adult male peacocks, they are raised semi-wild.

Female peacocks can breed at 24 months of age. However, it takes 3 years for the fertility rate to stabilize. If well cared for, peacocks can live up to 20 years.

The cage for the male peacock is open, with a spacious playground so that the peacock can fly, jump, sunbathe and spread its tail to show off its beauty.

Mr. Dat said: "If male peacocks want to have beautiful colors and good health, they must be raised outdoors. When it's sunny, the peacocks go out to sunbathe, show off their tails, and spread their wings. When it's dark or when it rains, the peacocks go inside to sleep.

Male peacocks sleep on high wooden lofts, similar to their natural behavior in the wild. Peacocks fly very well, so owners must cover them with nets.

Mr. Vu Tien Dat said that the farm raising rare birds - peacocks - currently has 300-400 birds depending on the time.

Each year, a female peacock lays 20 peacocks, and the farm can sell 200-300 peacocks each year. The current price of peacocks at 5 months old is 3.5 million VND/pair of male and female, and 1 month old peacocks are 1.5 million VND/pair.

As a young man, Mr. Dat is quite good at communication, selling peacock eggs and peacock breeds online all over the country. He sells peacocks on social networks such as Facebook, TikTok..., and transfers care techniques through online applications on the phone. He shared that peacocks are a fairly easy breed to care for, and eat a variety of foods such as rice, chicken feed, vegetables, tubers, fruits...

The male peacock has a very beautiful appearance, often showing off its tail and dancing, so many farms, many tourist areas, and even families with large gardens want to raise peacocks as ornamental creatures.

Minh Dieu Peacock Farm currently raises mainly two types of peacocks: the yellow-cheeked peacock, which is endemic to Vietnam, and the Indian peacock. The yellow-cheeked peacock is easy to raise, has a colorful appearance, and is popular in the market.

The Indian peacock is blue in color, sometimes mutating into white and iridescent, and is also chosen by many peacock lovers.

To prepare for raising peacocks, Minh Dieu peacock farm has applied for a license to raise wild animals, importing peacock breeds from legally licensed farms.

Currently, Minh Dieu provides peacock breeds to a number of farmers in Bao Loc City and neighboring areas. Peacock-raising households can take the initiative in consuming or Minh Dieu farm will receive a monthly supply of baby peacocks from households importing breeds.

According to Mr. Dat, the community's demand for raising peacocks is still quite large, with stable consumption. Currently, the number of peacocks produced by Minh Dieu farm as well as the breeding peacocks provided by satellite farmers are all sold by Mr. Tien Dat to the market at very good prices.

In addition, the peacock feathers of male peacocks that fall during the molting season are also products that many people buy to make handmade decorative materials. The whole body of the peacock can bring income to farmers, it is a very special animal on the B'Lao plateau.
