Even though there are combine harvesters, people in the hilly forest area of Nguyen Trai ward (Hai Phong) still keep the habit of harvesting by hand in scattered fields.

In the last days of the season, on the small fields scattered among the hills in Nguyen Trai ward, there is the sound of laughter mixed with the rapid swing of sickles. Crossing the small slopes, following the hillsides, they came to the rice fields nestled among the green hills and forests. The Chinese people here still preserve a special farming tool called “the scythe”. The tool is made from the trunk of the scythe plant, with a small sickle attached to the end, used both to gather and cut rice plants. In the hands of the farmer, the skillful "scythe" moves quickly, the sickle gently cuts through each ear of rice, giving off the strong scent of new straw. Every year at this time, women in the ward go to the fields together, some harvest, some bundle, laughter and chatter fill each field. Thanks to the help of her sisters, the rice field of Mrs. Mac Thi Chanh in Bai Thao 2 residential group was reduced to stubble in just a moment. Each harvest season is not only a harvest, but also an opportunity to strengthen neighborly ties, a beautiful tradition that has become a tradition for generations in this mountainous region. The children also followed their grandmother to the fields, their babbling voices mixed with the laughter of the adults, making the harvest season in Nguyen Trai mountain area more bustling and familiar. Preparing to turn 76, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tinh still maintains the habit of carefully picking up each rice flower that is scattered in the field. She said that each rice flower represents the sweat and effort of the entire crop, and it would be a pity to miss even one. The voices and laughter were lively, the sickles were swung quickly, and the golden rice bundles were quickly picked up. Due to the mountainous terrain, groups of people walking, holding bundles of golden rice, followed each other along the small slope down to the main road. Each bundle of rice is loaded onto the truck, neatly arranged, ready to be transported to the drying yard. In the midst of modern life, when the plains have become accustomed to the sound of combine harvesters, in the Nguyen Trai forest hills, the scene of hand harvesting still exists. The image of ethnic minority farmers beaming beside the ripe rice fields, their hands quickly wielding sickles, their voices and laughter echoing in the mountains and forests... makes the harvest here like a rustic picture.DO TUAN
