Many housewives said that recently, the prices of many familiar vegetables and leafy greens in daily meals have increased sharply, forcing them to balance their spending.
Vegetable prices increase, sellers are also sad
Ms. Bich Hanh, a housewife living in Chanh Hung ward, said that in October, the price of green squash was only about 10,000 VND/kg, but now it has increased to 35,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, forcing her to consider and buy less. "Vegetables are an indispensable dish for my family, because the price has increased, I only dare to buy 5,000 VND worth of water spinach for a meal with a little more vegetables," Ms. Hanh said.
At Binh An market in Binh Dong ward, prices of many vegetables have increased even higher, such as water spinach sold for 50,000 VND/kg, white cabbage for 45,000 VND/kg. According to traders, the prices have caused many consumers to "tighten their purse strings".
Talking to Tuoi Tre Online, Ms. Le Thi Kieu Diem - a trader at Lo Than market, Binh Dong ward - said that vegetable prices have fluctuated continuously in recent days.
Popular items such as squash, leafy vegetables, lettuce... have increased sharply. In particular, the price of squash has increased to 30,000 VND/kg compared to 10,000 VND/kg before, the price of cucumber has also increased from more than 10,000 VND/kg to 28,000 VND/kg. The price of coriander and green onions has increased even more sharply, currently the price of green onions has reached 70,000 VND/kg. Other vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, bitter melon... have also doubled compared to last month.
According to Ms. Diem, the main reason is that the supply has decreased sharply after the floods, making the goods at wholesale markets scarcer than before. The small traders themselves selling at retail markets do not make much profit because the import price is already high.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha, a consumer living in Binh Dong ward, shared: "My family sells groceries in the market. These past few days, the whole family has had to tighten their belts because vegetable prices have increased so much. Many of the items I sell now are not enough to buy a kilo of vegetables.
Before, when vegetables were cheap, I used to buy a lot for the whole family to eat comfortably. But now the price of a kilo of vegetables has increased to 60,000 VND, so when I go to the market, I have to think twice and don't dare to buy as freely as before."
Wait for it to cool down soon

Sharing the same situation, Mr. Ly Thanh Tam, owner of a vegetable stall on Pham The Hien Street, Ho Chi Minh City, said that previously the price of cabbage was only 20,000 VND/kg, now it has increased to 30,000 VND/kg. In addition, the price of tubers such as squash, luffa, and pumpkin has increased from 25,000 VND to about 40,000 - 45,000 VND/kg. Okra and tomatoes are now also 50,000 VND/kg.
Not only vegetables, many types of fruits are also not exempt from the "dizzying" price increase, with common increases ranging from 5,000 - 15,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
According to Ms. Le Thi Ro - a trader also at Lo Than market, a kilo of guava used to cost only 20,000 - 25,000 VND, now it has increased to 35,000 VND/kg, similarly the price of mango has increased from 25,000 to 30,000 VND/kg. Some fruits such as tangerines, papaya, American grapes have kept their prices, from 30,000 - 100,000 VND/kg, but the supply is not as abundant as before.
While the prices of vegetables at traditional markets still fluctuate strongly, the prices of similar items at supermarkets and food stores are more stable, with abundant supply.
According to the green vegetable counter of Co.opmart Pham The Hien supermarket, Binh Dong ward, green onions cost 10,500 VND/bunch, water spinach costs 13,000 - 18,000 VND/bunch depending on the type, Co.op Select squash costs 23,900 VND/kg, zucchini costs 39,000 VND/kg, and squash costs 42,900 VND/kg. Some supermarkets ran promotions on vegetables but soon announced they were out of stock.
According to traders, vegetable prices have increased sharply due to reduced supply, rainy weather, storms and floods in recent days, causing few products to arrive at the market, and a high rate of spoilage. However, if prices remain high, it will be difficult to sell because buyers tend to tighten their spending, so they still hope that prices will cool down soon when supply stabilizes again.
