On May 8, Viet Duc Hospital reported two serious accidents involving sugarcane juicers. Every year, in the summer, accidents involving sugarcane juicers occur more frequently.
The first case was a 6-year-old boy in Bac Giang who was taken to Viet Duc Hospital for emergency treatment on April 24 with peeling skin on his penis and scrotum, exposed testicles, and a high risk of infection and necrosis.
Dr. Bui Van Quang, Center for Andrology, Viet Duc Hospital, said that doctors performed surgery and sutured the skin on both sides of the genitals to preserve and restore the scrotal skin. After 3 months, the patient will undergo surgery to transfer the flap and shape the penis skin.
The patient’s family said the accident happened when the child was standing near a sugarcane juicer that was operating, and his pants got caught in the machine shaft. The sudden and strong pulling force directly impacted the child’s genitals. This is a rare but extremely serious situation, requiring intensive emergency surgery to preserve function.

The second case is a 70-year-old female patient in Phu Tho , who works as a sugarcane juice seller. On May 3, the patient was taken to Viet Duc Hospital for emergency treatment with her left hand crushed after being caught in a sugarcane press.
The patient said that while she was operating the machine, she suddenly felt dizzy and had no time to react, and her hand was caught in the engine.
Master - Doctor Nguyen Thanh Luan, Department of General Trauma Surgery, said that doctors have performed debridement of crushed tissue and treated the injury, and amputated the V finger.

The patient had to amputate a finger and had to deal with a crushed hand (Photo: Provided by the hospital).
Doctors warn that in the summer, the demand for soft drinks increases, leading to many household accidents from fruit and sugarcane juice machines.
Therefore, children should never be allowed near a motorized juicer while it is in operation. Elderly people and people with underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease should never work when they are tired, dizzy or lightheaded.
When operating machinery, everyone needs to wear safety equipment (protective gloves, emergency stop button, etc.)
