It cannot be denied that if we always have a thirst for learning, anywhere can be a school, anyone can be our teacher. And, exams are just one of the temporary events on the learning path of each person. Knowledge and the application of knowledge to real life are the most important things.
When we were in grade 12, preparing for the university entrance exam, most of us did not know what we wanted or what our academic ability was. Parents and relatives did not have much information to guide our children in their future. So the majority of us chose the school based on… trends or friends’ persuasion, not based on our own abilities. Whether the training field was suitable or not was not an important issue. That is why, at times, up to 70-80% of university students in Vietnam worked in a different field after graduation.
Now, as soon as they enter first grade, many students are already targeted by their parents to attend a local high school. To achieve the goal of “first 5 years”, parents spare no effort or money to send their children to extra classes every day of the week with the view that their children cannot be inferior to other people’s children. Thus, the 5 years of primary school childhood pass quickly in a series of regular and supplementary classes.
Entering the first year of secondary school, most students immediately have to embark on the “second 4-year plan” to aim for a prestigious public high school in the area. If it is a specialized school, it is needless to say how much pride their parents have compared to their friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Therefore, the 4-year secondary school schedule is no different from the 5-year primary school schedule. Students almost do not have to do anything other than study and study. The rest is taken care of by their parents.
Having passed the 9th grade, most of the first year high school students are now so familiar with studying that they are no longer surprised by the same study schedule as the previous 9 years. Even if their parents show a lack of interest, many students proactively ask to take extra classes to keep up with their friends. Because, having studied to this level, entering a university is a legitimate dream of anyone...
Back to our story in the past, when all difficulties were still surrounding us from all sides, from food, clothing to updating information, at that time, studying and taking exams were very innocent. If you passed the exam, you would continue studying, if you failed, you would carelessly study another profession or simply step into life and do all kinds of jobs to make a living. That is why, what is now called “life skills”, our generation at that time had plenty of them. Of course, along with that came plenty of difficulties, hardships, and… deprivations.
Of course, thanks to their existing "life skills", most of those who work in a field other than their training still adapt quickly and well to the new working environment. Many people quickly assert themselves and develop steadily in politics or economics.
Nowadays, it seems that some people place too much importance on learning, to the point of “deifying” it, thinking that people who do not study cannot do anything. The ancients said “People who do not study do not know morality, do not know right from wrong”, which means that people who do not study do not know morality, do not know right from wrong, but do not say that they do not study and do not know what to do. The ancients did not force people to study by sitting in school, but on the contrary, encouraged people to consider anyone else as their teacher, to learn from good people and avoid bad people.
The deification of learning has left many consequences. From the disease of achievement leading to lies in teaching and learning to the "stolen" childhood of students. From considering scores above all leading to life skills being nothing, making integration into real life extremely difficult. Even more sadly, many students cannot stand the pressure and become depressed, mentally ill, even choosing to leave life, leaving a burden on society and endless pain and regret for those left behind.
It is time to frankly admit that although studying is very commendable, studying is not the only way to lead us to a good future life. We may not be suitable to study this subject but can be completely good at another subject, not suitable at this time but very convenient at another time. In particular, we may not study at a specialized school, a selective class or a prestigious university, but we can completely study and work to have a really good job, at the same time still have a certain amount of knowledge enough to integrate with daily life.
Where to study, how to study, and what to study for depends on the conditions and abilities of each individual and his or her family. We cannot, because of the movement or because of the excessive pride of parents, push our children into the path of being… taught, having to study. Then, where will we find the scene of “every day at school is a happy day”. And the obvious consequence will be the creation of a class of people who “go to school with an umbrella in the morning and come back with an umbrella in the evening”.
