Many parents with children preparing to enter grades 1, 6, and 10 in Ho Chi Minh City sent questions to Tuoi Tre about which schools they should apply to if they want their children to attend French intensive classes.
What are the admission requirements for each level? If starting from grade 1, are students required to know French in advance and are they limited by the GIS admission system?
Responding to this issue, Mr. Pham Quang Tam - Deputy Head of the Secondary Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training - said that the 2018 general education program has included French as one of the official foreign languages in the national education system. The French enhancement program, formerly the French bilingual program, has been implemented since 1994.
Grade 1 French program does not enroll students based on place of residence
In Ho Chi Minh City, if parents want their children to enter grade 1 of the French language enhancement program, they will send them to schools that implement the program, including: Ket Doan Primary School (District 1); Luong Dinh Cua Primary School (District 3); Minh Dao Primary School (District 5); Bong Sao Primary School (District 8); and Tran Quoc Toan Primary School (Tan Binh District).
Enrollment for grade 1 French classes is carried out according to the plan to mobilize children to attend classes and the first classes of the 2025-2026 school year of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
The subjects are first grade students in Ho Chi Minh City who wish to study French and there are no regulations on residence when students register to study French at the 5 primary schools mentioned above.
Schools have enrollment quotas for French 1st grade classes based on local conditions. If the number of students registering meets the school's enrollment quota, they will be admitted, without being bound by residency requirements.
If the number of registrations is too large compared to the quota, the school can organize a survey of French language recognition ability to recruit enough quota.
The output standard of grade 5 of the French program is equivalent to DELF A1, A2 certificates.
Which schools teach grade 6 French program?
Grade 6 French program is taught at the following schools: Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1); Colette Secondary School (District 3); Hong Bang Secondary School (District 5); Chanh Hung Secondary School (District 8); Ngo Si Lien Secondary School (Tan Binh District).
The secondary school program follows the general education program framework and DELF B1 certificate programs. The output standard for grade 9 of the French program is equivalent to the DELF B1 certificate.
Enrollment in grade 6 French classes is carried out according to the plan to mobilize children to attend classes and the first classes of the 2025-2026 school year of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
The subjects are 5th grade students of the French program, who have completed primary school, have a final periodic test score of 8.0 or higher in each subject of Vietnamese and math, and an average score of 6.0 or higher in French, will be transferred directly to the 6th grade of French enhancement at the 5 middle schools mentioned above.
Which middle school to go to to continue the French program?
To enter the 10th grade French program, 9th grade students of the French program take the 10th grade entrance exam and can choose their wishes according to the French language path at the following schools: French specialized class at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted; French enhanced class at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Marie Curie High School; French NN1 class at Marie Curie High School.
