Japanese coach suspects Vietnamese referees are not subject to V-League regulations

On the evening of May 10 at Vinh Stadium, Hanoi Club had a heart-stopping 2-1 victory over Song Lam Nghe An , within the framework of round 22 of V-League 2024 - 2025.

The goals were scored by Michael Olaha (SLNA, pen. 33'), Pham Xuan Manh (HN, 44') and Daniel Passira (90'+10).

In addition to the dramatic developments on the field, the match also had a notable situation on the sidelines when the referee team did not allow Hanoi FC to put Vietnamese-American center back Kyle Colona on the field when the team made a substitution in the 83rd minute.

The reason given was because there was another Vietnamese-American player on the field at that time, Pierre Lamothe, who started from the beginning.

This incident was mentioned by Hanoi FC head coach Makoto Teguramori in the press conference after the match:

"I wonder and don't understand why the fourth referee said we can only use one overseas Vietnamese on the field.

This has affected the match plan of Hanoi Club. I think this issue needs to be clarified in referee management work."

According to Tuoi Tre Online , around the 80th minute of the match, Hanoi Club made a substitution with Kyle Colona replacing Nguyen Thanh Chung.

But because of the above referee-related situation, the capital team was forced to make a change, bringing Dao Van Nam onto the field to replace Thanh Chung in the 90th minute.

Regarding the registration of the list of players participating in the tournament, the V-League 2024 - 2025 regulations stipulate that V-League teams are allowed to register a maximum of: 2 foreign players of Vietnamese origin (also known as overseas Vietnamese).

For each match, the V-League 2024 - 2025 regulations also limit each team to registering only 3 foreign players .

In the 2024 - 2025 season, many teams have used 2 overseas Vietnamese players on the field at the same time, typically: Hong Linh Ha Tinh Club with Viktor Le (only had Vietnamese nationality since January 2025) and Adou Minh Leygley, Ho Chi Minh City Club with Patrik Le Giang and Zan Hoyt Le Cao Nguyen.
