Tracing the origin of a batch of fake acid reflux drugs at a pharmacy in Hanoi

On May 23, the Drug Administration of Vietnam ( Ministry of Health ) sent an official dispatch to local health departments regarding the inspection, handling, and tracing of the origin of counterfeit drug NEXIUM 40mg.

The document was issued after the agency received an analysis report from the Hanoi Center for Drug, Cosmetic and Food Testing, reporting on a product sample with the following information on the label: NEXIUM 40mg Enterik Kapli Pellet Tablet (Esomeprazole), batch number: 23H420, expiry date: 9.2027. The label does not have a circulation registration number, import license number, manufacturing facility, importing facility, or a secondary label in Vietnamese.

The drug sample was taken at Duc Anh pharmacy, a subsidiary of Duc Anh Pharmaceutical and Medical Equipment Company, No. 8, Huynh Thuc Khang Street, Lang Thuong Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi. It is a film-coated tablet preparation, blister pack of 7 tablets, box of 4 blisters.

The tested sample did not meet the quality requirements for the quantitative index of Esomeprazole. Specifically, the Esomeprazole content in this drug sample was 6.91 mg (equivalent to 17.27% compared to the content stated on the label).

The Drug Administration of Vietnam requested the Hanoi Department of Health to urgently report to Steering Committee 389 and coordinate with relevant agencies to inspect Duc Anh Pharmacy, trace the origin of the above product batch, and strictly handle violators.

The Ministry of Health also requested local health departments to inform drug trading and usage establishments and people not to buy, sell or use the above-mentioned fake NEXIUM 40mg Enterik Kapli Pellet Tablet (Esomeprazole); only buy and sell drugs at legal pharmaceutical businesses; do not buy and sell drugs of unknown origin.

When detecting suspicious signs of production and trading of fake drugs or drugs of unknown origin, people should notify health authorities and relevant authorities.

Nexium 40mg is a drug whose main active ingredient is Esomeprazole, indicated in the treatment of diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux, gastric and duodenal ulcers and Zollinger Ellison syndrome.
