The US gives TikTok more time to sell the app, China is not interested

The executive order issued Friday extends the deadline by 75 days. Trump previously extended the deadline to January 2025 for the law, which Congress passed last year.

“My administration has been working very hard to reach the SAVE TIKTOK Agreement and we have made tremendous progress,” the US President posted on his social network Truth Social.

“This deal requires further work to ensure all necessary approvals are in place… We look forward to working with TikTok and China to finalize the deal,” he added.

The TikTok Ban Act, passed with bipartisan support, would require the platform to be spun off from Chinese tech company ByteDance or banned in the US, citing data collection and national security concerns.

However, Mr. Trump's extension of the TikTok sale deadline is said to have little meaning when on Thursday, US media reported that ByteDance representatives contacted the White House to inform that the Chinese government had not approved the deal.

ByteDance later responded officially on Saturday that it is still discussing with the US government about plans to maintain TikTok's operations in the country, while re-emphasizing that no deal has been finalized yet.

ByteDance said in a statement that there were still significant issues to be resolved, adding that any deal would have to be approved under Chinese law.
