According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the US government is promoting a plan to ban global semiconductor chip companies from importing US machinery and equipment for production facilities in China.

The newspaper said that the US Department of Commerce (DOC) export control official informed companies such as Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC of the new policy.

White House officials explained the policy as similar to China's recent licensing system to control rare earth exports to the United States.

Earlier in 2022, the administration of former US President Joe Biden also announced export control measures, including a near-complete ban on the transfer of advanced semiconductor chip equipment to China.

However, companies like Samsung were still allowed to use an exception clause that allowed them to import American equipment into their factories in China.

Now, the Trump administration is considering repealing this exemption, so companies may have to apply for a license each time they ship equipment to China.

If this policy is implemented and maintained, Korean semiconductor chip factories in the US will inevitably be affected, such as facing difficulties in importing components and production interruptions.

However, WSJ said this policy has not yet been officially approved and there is still no consensus among US authorities.

In the context of the US-China trade tensions that have just temporarily subsided, many opinions are concerned that this new move by Washington could ignite a new wave of conflict between the two world superpowers./.
