Tran Trung Kien (11A1 student at Le Hong Phong High School, Phu Yen ) has just won convincingly in the first quarter of the Road to Olympia 2024 competition with 235 points.
Through that, he not only won the first laurel wreath for himself (because before that, the male student entered the monthly and quarterly competitions only as the contestant with the highest second place score), but also brought the first annual final telecast in history to Phu Yen province.
“I entered the monthly and quarterly competitions as the contestant with the highest second place score, but then won the quarterly competition, I was really happy and surprised. Because I not only achieved my biggest dream of standing on the Olympia stage but also did more than bring the first television bridge to my home province,” Kien shared.
Kien said that since he was little, he has been passionate about knowledge programs and especially loves watching the show Road to Olympia.
“When I was little, my grandparents and parents often turned on this program and I watched it with them, from there I developed a love for this program. When I entered junior high school, I had a clear direction that I was determined to participate in this playground. At the beginning of grade 10, I started to seriously plan my review and at the end of that school year, I submitted my application to take the exam.”
Kien said that to prepare for the Olympia, he actively sought to join communities and compete regularly, to get used to and practice with the atmosphere and pressure of competition.
Kien realized that for Olympia, two very important skills are typing and clicking the mouse quickly to gain the right to answer. Therefore, he also regularly practices these skills.
Kien said that Olympia is a playground that requires contestants to study all subjects and have knowledge of many topics and fields. Kien assessed that his strengths are Math and questions related to calculation.
“I am stronger in natural sciences than social sciences. However, due to time pressure at the studio, I felt that I did not solve the natural science questions very well. I think I will have to practice more and aim to do better in the final competition of the year,” Kien shared.
The male student liked the Obstacle Course and Finish Line competitions the most. “Because the Obstacle Course requires candidates to think and connect knowledge and data quickly and accurately. The Finish Line competition requires candidates to demonstrate their deep and broad knowledge. Not to mention, this is the competition that can create a breakthrough in scores as well as create surprises,” Kien said. The male student liked stringing together, connecting data, and analyzing to come up with answers.
While the Warm-Up and Acceleration are not Kien’s strong points in the weekly and monthly competitions. “I think my weakness is that I sometimes lack a bit of speed. That’s why I think I need to improve my speed in the yearly finals, especially in the Acceleration competition.”
Sharing his study secrets, Kien said that in order to build a solid foundation, the first thing he did was to focus on the lectures given by his teachers in class. Then, he read the textbooks carefully and grasped the knowledge thoroughly, before looking for reference books and more advanced books in each subject.
Kien also actively searched for additional knowledge online. At first, Kien had a headache in dividing his time and balancing between Olympia preparation and schoolwork, excellent student competitions as well as sports and extracurricular activities.
However, after a while, I improved my time allocation for these activities and got quite used to the intensity of working with such a daily schedule.
“Of course, my time for hobbies is also very limited. But I still try to spend 1-2 sessions/week playing soccer with my classmates to stay healthy. Sometimes I also ride a bike or play badminton with my friends. Because I understand that only when I have good health can I study well,” Kien said.
At school, the male student is considered by friends and teachers to be sociable, progressive and always ready to help his classmates.
The most memorable memory was last summer when I attended the Mathematics Summer School organized by the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics - VIASM in Gia Lai. Here, I learned a lot of new knowledge, stimulating my passion for mathematics. I also met and talked with Professor Ngo Bao Chau - my math idol. "That also gave me a lot of motivation to strive even harder in my studies."
Kien said that to prepare for the final round of the Road to Olympia in 2024, he will make a clear and systematic plan. First, he will allocate time to review the knowledge he has learned to master it. After that, he will continue to update new knowledge.
“In the final match of the year, the knowledge and questions will be at a very difficult level, requiring very careful preparation. I remind myself to review seriously and systematically to prepare for the final match.
I don’t think that winning the first ticket with a longer preparation time to the final competition day of the year is an advantage and can be subjective. I don’t consider winning the televised match as the final destination to be satisfied and subjective, but will continue to strive and practice more to aim for a truly explosive and memorable final match of the year,” Kien expressed his determination to once again bring glory to Phu Yen province.
In addition to the goal of winning the Olympia finals, Kien said he still does not forget to complete his schoolwork well.
