Paraguayan lawmaker and three others killed in plane crash

The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, about 180 kilometers from Paraguay's capital, Asuncion, killing Walter Harms, a congressman from the country, and three of his crew, according to police reports.

“It is with great sadness that I receive the sad news of the passing of our colleague, friend and brother, Walter Harms,” Paraguayan Vice President Pedro Alliana said on social media platform X.

Images on social media showed burning wreckage in a field. Police said the plane hit a tree on takeoff and burst into flames when it hit the ground.

In July 2018, a Paraguayan minister, a vice minister and two others were killed when their small plane crashed into a swampy area south of the country's capital.

Small plane crashes have become more frequent in recent years around the world , as more and more people are using them as personal transportation. Most recently, 12 people were killed on October 29 in a small plane crash in the Amazon, Brazil.
