In a new study published in the journal Nature, scientists made a surprising discovery about the dueling dinosaur skeleton discovered in 2006 in the Hell Creek region, dating back about 65.5 million years. Photo: Anthony Hutchings.

For many years, researchers have believed that the dueling dinosaur skeleton above is evidence of a battle between two iconic species of the Cretaceous period: Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex) and Triceratops. Photo: NC State University.

However, after 5 years of analysis, the research team led by Dr. James Napoli (Stony Brook University) and Lindsay Zanno (North Carolina State University) made a surprising discovery. Photo: North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

Specifically, the results of bone microscopic examination showed that the small individual in the fossil was an adult, not a baby T-rex as previously speculated. In fact, the small individual was a separate species - Nanotyrannus lancensis. Photo: NC Museum of Natural Sciences.

Nanotyrannus lancensis is a fast, agile predatory dinosaur, much smaller in size than T-rex. Nanotyrannus is about 5.5m long, agile, has long legs, and developed forelimbs to catch prey. Meanwhile, T-rex is about 12.8m long, has big, strong legs and possesses a powerful bite to hunt prey. Photo: Raul Martin.
