The Japan Times reported that a 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan at 5:03 p.m. on November 9 (local time), with a level 4 tremor on the Japanese scale recorded in Morioka city and Yahaba town in Iwate, as well as in Wakuya town in neighboring Miyagi prefecture.
As of 7:00 p.m. (local time), there were 10 more aftershocks in the same area, including one with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale.

According to the Iwate Prefectural Government, as of 6:30 p.m. on November 9, no casualties had been reported in the earthquake.
However, a tsunami warning was issued for Iwate Prefecture following the earthquake. Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, issued an evacuation order for 6,138 people from 2,825 households in the coastal area.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 20-cm wave was observed at Ofunato port in Iwate at 6:25 p.m., while another 20-cm wave was seen at Kuji port in Iwate at 5:52 p.m.,...
The tsunami warning includes expected waves up to 1 meter high.
East Japan Railway said the Tohoku Shinkansen line suffered a brief power outage and operations between Sendai and Shin-Aomori stations were suspended.
According to Tohoku Electric Power Company, there were no reports of abnormalities at the Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi Prefecture.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency said at a press conference on Friday evening that earthquakes of similar magnitude or even stronger magnitude could occur in the next few days. He also advised people to stay away from the coast in areas where tsunami warnings have been issued.
