Secretary of State Blinken arrived in Beijing on June 18, the first visit to China by a US secretary of state in nearly five years. The trip comes after Blinken canceled a planned visit to Beijing in February due to tensions over a spy balloon between the US and China.
There are many issues of concern between the two countries, including high-level disagreements as well as potential areas of cooperation.
First and foremost, Mr. Blinken’s visit is about reestablishing diplomatic engagement of any kind. US officials say Mr. Blinken will push for open channels of communication to ensure that competition with China does not degenerate into conflict.
In a press conference before Secretary of State Blinken arrived in Beijing, Mr. Kurt Campbell, White House coordinator for the Indo- Pacific , said that now is a good time to discuss the above issue to reduce the risk of conflict. According to Mr. Campbell, both sides need to work together, cannot let disagreements divide and hinder the direction of global priorities.

Earlier, in a phone call with Secretary of State Antony Blinken on June 14, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said that the US should "stop interfering in China's internal affairs and stop harming China's sovereignty , security and development interests in the name of competition."
Analysts say easing trade tensions will be the next big issue during the top US diplomat's visit to China.
US President Joe Biden's relationship with China got off to a rocky start, in part because he failed to roll back trade measures enacted by his predecessor Donald Trump.
In some areas, Mr. Biden has even tightened the screws, such as restricting the export of chips to China to maintain dominance in the most advanced electronic technologies.

On the Chinese side, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced a ban on domestic critical information infrastructure operators from purchasing products from US chip manufacturers due to "serious risks to cybersecurity" and national security.
Ultimately, the US secretary of state’s visit to China is aimed at preventing conflict. According to experts, Mr. Blinken may reiterate the warning that there will be serious consequences if China provides military and financial support to Russia in the conflict with Ukraine.
According to Mr. Daniel Kritenbrink, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, Secretary of State Blinken's main goal will be "frank, direct and constructive" discussions with China.
But Mr. Kritenbrink was cautious about the prospects for progress.
