TURNING MANHATTAN'S CONTEMPORARY HERITAGE INTO A KEY TOURIST AREA
The People's Committee of Vinh Long province has just issued a decision approving the general planning for the construction of the Mang Thit contemporary heritage site (Mang Thit district) until 2045.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Liet, Vice Chairman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee, the planning boundary covers an area of over 3,000 hectares, located in 4 communes of Mang Thit District: My An, My Phuoc, Nhon Phu and Hoa Tinh. The short-term planning until 2030 and the long-term planning until 2045 will turn the contemporary heritage site (brick kilns, pottery...) into a key tourist area of the province, oriented to be a national tourist area, playing an important role in promoting socio -economic development, especially tourism for Vinh Long province in particular and the Mekong Delta region in general.
The area on both sides of Thay Cai canal is where the most traditional brick kilns are concentrated.
The objective of the planning is to study and propose general planning solutions for the Mang Thit contemporary heritage site, exploit the overall values and potentials, develop community tourism into one of the economic pillars in the correlation of sustainable development with other economic sectors, environment and society; ensure national security and defense, and form a landscape - heritage - service ecosystem.
This includes reviewing, updating, adjusting and supplementing the contents of relevant planning projects in the area, to ensure overall and harmonious orientations, and to fully exploit the potential in the entire research area. Orientation of spatial organization, land use planning, technical infrastructure, social infrastructure as the basis for zoning planning, detailed planning, and construction investment management. Creating a legal basis for planning to implement the next steps of construction investment management and socio-economic development according to the plan. The competent authority will conduct additional surveys and measurements of topographic maps at a scale of 1/10,000, and supplement fluctuating locations to have accurate documents for planning implementation.
People agree to keep the brick kiln
Mr. Phan Van Giau, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long, said that after the Provincial People's Committee issued the approval decision, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism handed over the documents related to the planning task to the Provincial Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Civil and Industrial Works to continue implementation. Currently, the project is in the stage of establishing the general planning task.

Mr. Giau said that the issuance of policies to support people to keep the kilns depends on the province's budget resources. The entire project area is expected to spend about 10 billion VND to support people to continue keeping the kilns while implementing the next steps of the project.
"In the past time, the Department and related units, Mang Thit District People's Committee, and communes in the project area have organized meetings with people with kilns to propagate and explain to people the economic, cultural, and social efficiency when implementing the project, which will contribute to changing livelihoods, increasing income, and improving the material and spiritual life of people through the tourism development orientation of the project area... Up to now, people have agreed to keep the kiln to participate in implementing projects in the coming time," said Mr. Giau.
Mr. Tran Van Tien (residing in Phu Thanh A hamlet, Nhon Phu commune, Mang Thit district) said: "My family has 2 traditional brick kilns but has stopped using them and intends to dismantle them to build new kilns. However, since hearing the local government's propaganda about the significance of the heritage, my family has agreed to keep them. I also hope that the government will soon implement it, because kilns that are not left for a long time will easily be damaged."
According to Mr. Phan Van Giau, when the general planning and detailed planning are approved, the relevant departments will advise the Provincial People's Committee to organize various forms of calling for investors to participate in the projects of the project; at the same time, there will be specific policies and instructions to make it easy for all organizations and individuals to participate in the projects.
