With the characteristics of being easy to grow, easy to care for, and suitable for soil conditions, lotus is being grown in many localities of Kim Dong district, bringing a good source of income to many families.
Ms. Vu Hong Dung's family in Ta Thuong village is one of the households that grow the most lotus in Chinh Nghia commune with an area of about 4 hectares. Initially, she focused on growing lotus seeds, but in recent years she has switched to growing imported lotus varieties for flower exploitation such as: S1000, Quan Am, Phat Am, Super, Juwaba... These are mainly lotus varieties with many outstanding advantages such as: large flowers, beautiful shape, unique color, rich fragrance and longer lasting than traditional flower varieties.
Ms. Dung said: On average, every day, my family supplies the market with 3 to 4 thousand lotus flowers of all kinds. Of which, white Quan Am lotus, pink Quan Am lotus and S1000 lotus are very popular with customers, looking to buy at the field price of 4 thousand VND/flower, often in a state of supply not meeting demand.
In Ngoc Thanh commune, in recent years, local people have exploited the water surface area of ponds, lakes, and low-lying rice fields to grow lotus. Up to now, the whole commune has about 10 hectares of lotus for flowers and lotus for tubers.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hoa's family in Duyen Yen village is the household with the largest lotus growing area in Ngoc Thanh commune with nearly 10 acres; of which about 5 acres are used to grow lotus seeds for tubers, the remaining area is used to grow lotus flowers and seeds. Mr. Hoa said: Lotus is an easy-to-grow plant, requires little care, has a low loss rate, only costs the first time of planting, then only care, fertilize and harvest for many years. Lotus for flowers and seeds is harvested from May to August; lotus for tubers is harvested from August to December. Growing lotus brings my family an income of about 300 million VND each year, many times higher than growing rice.
have a nice shape
According to the synthesis from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kim Dong district, currently, the lotus growing area in the district is more than 15 hectares, concentrated in communes such as Ngoc Thanh, Chinh Nghia, Pham Ngu Lao... The main lotus varieties grown are: Pink lotus for seeds, Japanese lotus for tubers and imported lotus varieties for flowers. The planting season is from January to February, the harvest time is from May to December; on average, each sao of lotus growing brings in an income of 5 to 30 million VND, 5-7 times higher than rice cultivation.
According to the experience of long-time lotus growers, although lotus is quite easy to grow, one-time planting can yield harvests for many years, short harvest time, easy care, few pests and diseases and stable output. However, for this crop to bring optimal economic efficiency, growers need to update market demand and select quality lotus varieties for cultivation; have a firm grasp of knowledge about the growth, development and harvest cycle, pay special attention to soil quality to adjust the nutritional regime...
Currently, lotus products are consumed very conveniently, with traders coming to the place to order and purchase. Not only selling seeds, flowers, tubers, other parts of the lotus plant such as: leaves, heart, pistil can also be sold, increasing income for growers. Many households also open photography services at lotus ponds, opening up a new direction in agricultural economic development.
