On April 8, Major General, Doctor, People's Physician Tran Quoc Viet, Party Committee Secretary, Director of Military Hospital 175, said that Military Hospital 175 has performed nearly 50 successful kidney transplants, but this is the first time a kidney transplant has been performed from a brain-dead donor organ source taken on-site, closing the entire process from receiving the donor - determining brain death - organ retrieval - to organ transplantation at the hospital.

With professional support from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and frontline hospitals such as 108 Military Central Hospital, Children's Hospital 2, Hue Central Hospital, the entire professional process from brain death confirmation, consultation, completion of legal documents to organ retrieval, was implemented urgently, seriously and in accordance with legal regulations.

During the surgery that took place on the afternoon of April 7, despite being on a holiday, the units mobilized nearly 100 doctors, nurses, and technicians to coordinate urgently and successfully retrieve many tissues and organs, including 2 kidneys, liver (divided into 2 lobes), heart, and 2 corneas. These organs were immediately transported to receiving hospitals for transplantation to seriously ill patients waiting for organ transplants, opening up new opportunities for them to live.

The donated organs were transferred to Military Central Hospital 108, Children's Hospital 2 and Hue Central Hospital to save the lives of patients waiting for transplants.

For the fastest and safest transport, Military Hospital 175 received support from Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police and Airport Services & Operations Center (ASOC) - Vietnam Airlines closely coordinated with Military Hospital 175 to transport the organs on the fastest possible flight, ensuring optimal organ quality for transplantation.

The organ harvesting surgery was performed with solemn rituals, including a minute of silence to pay tribute to the organ donor, as a deep thank you for the noble gesture and humane spirit of the patient's family. This is one of the ethical principles that Military Hospital 175 always respects in medical practice.

Ms. PTTP (46 years old), the wife of the organ donor, emotionally shared: "When the doctor informed us that my husband was no longer able to recover, our family was very heartbroken. I also presented my husband's wishes that if he died, he wanted to donate his organs to save people. If we could save someone else, so that a part of him could continue to live, that would be the best thing. Now, knowing that there are people who have received liver and kidney transplants and have a chance to live thanks to this sharing, we feel somewhat comforted."

As of the morning of April 8, the donated organs had been successfully transplanted into 7 patients. Of these, 2 were at Military Hospital 175, 2 were at Hue Central Hospital, 2 were at Hospital 108 and one was at Children's Hospital 2.

"Currently, the need for organ transplants is very large, while the number of donors is still very modest. Organ transplants are a professional matter, but organ donation is a humane act, a social matter, of people who are willing to give a part of their body to bring life to others. The donor's family today did something extremely meaningful that not everyone can do. We would like to express our gratitude for this noble gesture," Major General Tran Quoc Viet shared.
