Realizing that natural squid resources are becoming increasingly scarce, a resident of Phu Quoc Island boldly experimented with raising squid in cages, which are usually used to raise fish. The initial results were unexpectedly successful.

That is Mr. Vo Van Quang (52 years old, residing in An Thoi ward, Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province). Mr. Quang said that up to now, his family has made a living by squid fishing. From 2002 onwards, the fishing grounds began to gradually dry up. Many nights, the amount of squid caught was not enough to cover the cost of fuel for the fishing boat, and there were even nights when no squid was caught.
The reason is the high demand of tourists to Phu Quoc Island. Local fishermen and immigrants from the mainland continuously “sweep” the sea, so the squid cannot reproduce in time. “Many people also have a hobby of eating squid eggs, and this hobby is causing fewer and fewer squid to be able to reproduce,” said Mr. Quang.
To maintain their livelihood, Mr. Quang’s family turned to renting sea space to raise fish in cages. While raising fish, Mr. Quang still remembered squid – a specialty of Phu Quoc sea.
After decades of working with squid, Mr. Quang realized that although squid is difficult to raise, if you pay attention and accumulate experience, you can do it. First, you have to prepare and clean the cage. Then, buy squid from fishermen caught at sea (18-20 pieces/kg), and raise them at a density of about 10-15 kg/cage (area 16m2 ). The food for squid must be fresh fish. At night, the cage must be equipped with enough light so that the squid do not eat each other.
Mr. Quang added that the first week after stocking was considered healthy, with a very low loss rate, less than 10% of the initial number of squid. After an average of about 1 month, they can be sold to the market. With 3 cages, each month, Mr. Quang harvests nearly 1 ton of squid measuring 14-15 pieces/kg, the selling price at the cage for traders to buy is 500,000 VND/kg. After deducting all costs, the profit is about 150 million VND/month.

“I plan to expand the squid farming area. And of course, if the relevant authorities support capital and protect the area for natural squid reproduction, this aquatic resource will never be exhausted,” said Mr. Quang.
Mr. Quang Trong Thao, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province, said that Mr. Quang's model was the first recorded in the local sea area. Squid is a species with a very fast reproduction rate, the problem is to preserve the habitat for the squid to reproduce smoothly. In the near future, the agricultural sector will delve deeper and learn more about this squid domestication model.
