What is temporomandibular joint dislocation?
The temporomandibular joint is the only movable joint of the craniofacial region. The joint consists of the articular surface of the mandible and the articular surface of the temporal bone and other intermediate components such as the joint capsule, articular disc and articular ligaments. The temporomandibular joint has a complex structure and plays an extremely important role in human eating and speaking activities.
Temporomandibular joint dislocation, also known as jaw dislocation, is an imbalance between the lower jaw joint and the temporomandibular joint, making it difficult to open and close the mouth, chew and swallow, and causing pain and discomfort.
What to do when you have a temporomandibular joint dislocation
Symptoms of temporomandibular joint dislocation are the lower jaw deviated to one side or protruding forward, making it difficult for the patient to open and close the mouth, or even unable to close the mouth.
People with temporomandibular joint dislocation may experience symptoms such as: jaw pain, headache, lower jaw deviated to one side, sunken cheek on the healthy side, flat cheek on the dislocated side, and mouth unable to open wide.
Although dislocation is not a dangerous disease, it causes a lot of inconvenience in eating and living, and if not treated promptly, it will seriously affect your health. Therefore, if you have a dislocated temporomandibular joint leading to facial asymmetry, you should go to the Dental and Maxillofacial Clinic for treatment.
