Teacher Nguyen Viet Phuong guides students to practice at Minh Khai Aerobic Club.
As a Physical Education teacher at Minh Khai Secondary School, Mr. Nguyen Viet Phuong was once troubled when he witnessed the situation of students being less and less active. After school, most of them spent time on TV, phones, and video games. With many years of teaching experience, he realized that this seriously affected the physical strength, spirit, and communication skills of students. Meanwhile, the time for physical education at school was short, and the lessons lacked the appeal to attract students to participate actively. From these concerns, Mr. Phuong found a new direction - a sport that was both accessible and attractive enough for students. In 2007, when Aerobics began to be included in the Phu Dong Sports Festival competitions, Mr. Phuong realized that this was the "key" to stimulating the physical education and sports movement in schools.
However, turning the idea into reality is not simple. In the early days, Minh Khai Aerobic Club of Minh Khai Secondary School encountered many difficulties, from facilities, equipment, to finding accompanying teachers. “When we first started, we had to manage everything ourselves. At one point, I had to deduct nearly 1/3 of my monthly salary to buy mats for students. The subject was new, there were few teachers, and students were not familiar with it, so maintaining the class was very difficult,” Mr. Phuong shared. However, the difficulties did not discourage him. With his love for the profession and perseverance, he gradually built the Aerobic movement in the school and spread it to many other units. From a few initial students, Minh Khai Aerobic Club now has hundreds of students studying regularly. Many other schools such as Dien Bien 1 Primary School, Dien Bien 2 Primary School, Dong Tho Primary School... also have Aerobic Clubs guided by him with more than 200 students participating.
Aerobics not only helps students exercise physically, but is also a way for them to relieve stress after school. Mr. Phuong said: "Only when they are in good health, can students study and develop comprehensively. Aerobics not only helps students become physically stronger but also develops discipline, confidence and the ability to work in groups." In Mr. Phuong's class, the atmosphere is always cheerful and encouraging. He does not focus on achievements but aims to help students feel the joy of movement. There is no pressure or criticism, instead there are compliments and sincere encouragement. Thanks to that, from a weak and shy girl, after joining Mr. Phuong's Aerobic Club, Ta Mai Phuong, a student at Lam Son High School for the Gifted, has become bolder, happier and more active. “Before, I felt very shy when communicating with friends, and besides going to school, I didn’t have many other hobbies. But since learning Aerobics, I feel healthier, more excited, and always receive attention and help from the coaches and friends in the club.”
In particular, from the small classroom in the school yard, Mr. Phuong discovered and nurtured many talented students. They were trained systematically and professionally to participate in Phu Dong Sports Festivals at all levels, from the city to the whole country. Thanks to that, Minh Khai Aerobic Club has become a bright spot in the Thanh Hoa school sports movement, with a series of outstanding achievements at the National Children's Festival and Phu Dong Sports Festivals at all levels. Thanks to this approach, many students have been attached to the subject for a long time. Hoang Thi Kim Ngan, a student at Tran Mai Ninh Secondary School, said: “I have been studying Aerobics with Mr. Phuong for more than 6 years. At first, I found this to be a very healthy physical activity that could help me relieve stress and connect with more friends. After that, under the teacher's guidance, I increasingly loved this sport and together with my friends achieved many achievements such as 1 Gold Medal, 1 Silver Medal at the Provincial Phu Dong Sports Festival in 2019 and 3 Gold Medals at the National Phu Dong Sports Festival in 2023."
Through years of perseverance, Mr. Phuong has proven that Aerobics is not only a sport, but also a bridge between teachers and students, between schools and the physical training movement. From his love for the profession, his dedication and his desire to contribute, he has inspired a passion for exercise in many generations of students. If in the past, physical education was often considered a "secondary subject", then for people like Mr. Nguyen Viet Phuong, it is an important foundation for forming a well-rounded person. Aerobics hours not only help students become healthier but also nurture discipline, will and confidence for each student.
