Spring gifts include books and many items

In the cold weather of the early morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, in the mountainous area of Nam Tra My District ( Quang Nam ), Mr. Le Huy Phuong, Principal of Tra Don Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, drove a pickup truck loaded with gifts including books and many other items straight to Ong Phung, a remote school nestled in the mountains and forests of Nam Tra My. These gifts were donated by young people in the lowlands under the program "Thousands of books - thousands of dreams".

Confessions of teachers and students in the highlands: The dream of becoming a teacher of highland students

The rainy season has just passed, causing many concrete roads in Tra Don commune to collapse, the muddy road surface with tire marks makes the journey to bring love to children in the highlands even more difficult. Principal Phuong's pickup truck went back and forth 3 times on the muddy red dirt road to carry goods and transfer volunteers from the Youth Union of Thanh Nien Newspaper - Central Coast Office, PhD.Hub Academic Community to Ong Phung school...

Along with volunteers helping to dress students in new uniforms and warm clothes, teacher Huynh Thi Thanh Ha was moved to show off the school on Ong Phung roof that had just been built by the Friends Club at the beginning of the 2024 school year. This school, located in the middle of a primeval forest, still has difficulties that teachers and students on Ong Phung roof must overcome together every day.

"The two years I taught at Ong Phung Roof School were a time when I had many memories of the dilapidated school. Although the school is now much more spacious and solid than before, when it rains, there are landslides, traffic jams... we have to walk for hours to move to people's houses to ask for shelter, because we are afraid of landslides," Ms. Ha confided.

"When I learned about the volunteer recruitment program, I registered early to have the opportunity to come to the children in the Nam Tra My highlands. I was very moved when I personally put on new warm clothes for the children. Seeing the innocent, happy smiles of the children made me forget all the hardships on the way to Ong Phung school", volunteer Cam Hang shared.

Receiving hundreds of comic books from the program, teacher Ha said that elementary school students love reading comic books and are very attentive every time she reads them.

"At the beginning of the new year of At Ty, in addition to warm clothes and blankets... the books and stories that young people bring from Da Nang City will be a great motivation for us to stay and spread knowledge. We will strongly spread the reading culture in this mountainous area," said Ms. Ha.

Volunteers installed 3 bookshelves and arranged nearly 1,000 books and stories so that primary school students can access good resources.

"Thousands of books - thousands of dreams is a very meaningful program for us teachers and students. When students read good books and stories, it will help them have more opportunities for entertainment, and their childhood will also be more "colorful", said principal Phuong.

Gratitude to the teacher in the highlands

Born in the highlands of Nam Tra My, the young ethnic Cor teacher Tran Thi Minh (a kindergarten teacher at Ong Phung school) after graduating from university was determined to return to the mountains and forests to care for and teach children. When hearing the volunteer group's information about dozens of new pillows donated by an English center in Da Nang City, teacher Minh immediately announced to the class: "You are lacking pillows, now I will let you choose the new pillow you like and use it right away."

Ms. Minh said that before Tet, many volunteer groups visited and gave gifts to the people and students at the school. "Tet in the mountainous areas is never enough and complete, especially for children. When I received gifts from the lowlands, when the children wore new warm clothes with excited faces and innocent smiles, I was very touched," Ms. Minh confided.

Understanding the difficulties that teachers face in the highlands, the program created a surprise by sending a bundle of ao dai fabric to the teachers at Ong Phung school.

"When talking to the teachers, we learned that the teachers at the school would also be in charge of the students' meals and accommodation. I was very touched. The whole group brought stacks of ao dai so that the teachers could make beautiful ao dai for them to wear in the lecture hall," said Dr. Tran Quoc Thien, representative of the PhD.Hub Academic Community, moved.
