Pig prices remain high

Contrary to the continuous increase in May, in June 2024, the domestic pig price decreased slightly due to low demand, down to below 70,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, on June 28, 2024, the price of live pigs in the Northern region fluctuated between 67,000 - 69,000 VND/kg, down 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg compared to the end of last month. The price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions fluctuated between 63,000 - 67,000 VND/kg, down 2,000 - 4,000 VND/kg. The price of live pigs in the Southern region fluctuated between 66,000 - 68,000 VND/kg, down 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg compared to the end of May 2024.

Entering July 2024, the price of live pigs will remain below 70,000 VND/kg. Specifically, the price of live pigs in the North on July 11 was around 67,000 - 69,000 VND/kg; the price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions was around 62,000 - 68,000 VND/kg; in the South, the purchase price fluctuated between 63,000 - 66,000 VND/kg.

At businesses, the price of CP pigs in the South is 68,000 VND/kg; the price of CP pigs in the North is 67,000 VND/kg. Currently, the price of pork pieces at traditional markets in Hanoi is commonly around 120,000 - 145,000 VND/kg.

Although the price of live pigs in June did not exceed 70,000 VND/kg, the current price is 14,000 - 16,000 VND/kg higher than at the end of 2023. According to many farmers, last year, the price of live pigs sold at the farm was only 48,000 - 52,000 VND/kg, causing farmers to lose 5,000 VND/kg. For each pig sold, farmers have to suffer a loss of 5 - 10 million VND.

Losses have made many farmers uninterested in restocking their herds. According to Nguyen Tri Cong, Chairman of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, a preliminary survey of small-scale livestock households and large enterprises showed that they had reduced their herds by 30-40%, and in some places by up to 70%.

According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , according to the results of the livestock farming trend survey on April 1, 2024 of nearly 26,300 pig farming households nationwide, 3.07% of households plan to expand production, 88.1% of households plan to stabilize production in the coming time, 5.8% of households will reduce production, and 3.03% of households will no longer raise pigs.

In the context of the increasingly narrowing small-scale livestock farming model, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development assessed that the pig herd tends to increase strongly again due to the strong shift of household farming to semi-industrial farming, linking with businesses; farm farming in a chain combining bio-safety, disease safety and application of advanced technology.

It is estimated that the total number of pigs in the country by the end of June 2024 will reach more than 25.5 million, an increase of about 2.9% over the same period in 2023; the output of live pigs for slaughter in the first 6 months of the year is estimated at 2.53 million tons, an increase of 5.1% over the same period in 2023.

Increase livestock linkage, reduce input costs

Although in the general picture of the first 6 months of the year, the price of live pigs tends to increase. However, currently, the African swine fever epidemic is complicated in many localities, causing the livestock situation to be unstable, still facing many difficulties, especially for small-scale livestock farming areas.

A survey by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that the proportion of small-scale livestock households is about 30%, equivalent to more than 1.7 million households. In addition to the loss, the number of small-scale households has decreased due to the new Animal Husbandry Law. The decrease in the number of small-scale livestock households does not affect the target of increasing pork output by 4% (nearly 4.9 million tons) in 2024. Because large livestock enterprises and new farms are the decisive factors in pork output growth.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts that the supply of pigs will increase again in the coming time. However, due to the complicated epidemic situation, the price of live pigs may remain high and only decrease again in 2025.

According to experts, the price of live pigs may remain at the current level until the end of 2024 because small-scale farmers have just started to restore their herds after the African swine fever outbreak in 2023 and there will be new supply to the market at least until December. Meanwhile, traders believe that in a few months, when students return to school, demand will increase, and the price of live pigs will increase slightly, reaching 70,000 VND/kg.

Commenting on the situation of pig farming, Mr. Nguyen Van Trong - former Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: professional farming on a closed farm scale is the trend in the future and the small-scale farming model will gradually disappear.

Because, when raising livestock according to a closed farm model, the cost will be reduced by 7-10% compared to small-scale households. Enterprises can be self-sufficient in breeding animals and animal feed. Meanwhile, farmers who buy animal feed and breeding animals from outside will have to bear higher prices of 1,000 VND/kg and 500,000 VND/breeding animal.

"Small-scale livestock farmers should cooperate with each other in cooperative models, or link up with businesses. This way, farmers can optimize costs on breeding stock and animal feed, thereby maintaining their pig herds," Mr. Nguyen Van Trong recommended.
