Important resources for Nam Dan commune to preserve forests

BHG - In recent years, with the efforts of local authorities and people, forest management and protection in Nam Dan commune (Xin Man) has achieved many positive results, contributing to improving livelihoods and community awareness in protecting valuable natural resources.

Implementing the direction of the Central, the province and the district on the policy of payment for forest environmental services (PFES), the People's Committee of Nam Dan commune synchronously deployed legal documents such as the 2017 Forestry Law, Decree No. 99 of the Government and instructions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Party Committee and the commune government strengthened close coordination with the District Forest Protection Department and the Provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund to disseminate policies, conduct field inspections, accept and pay for FES in accordance with procedures and legal regulations.

Secretary of the Party Committee of Nam Dan Commune, Truong Thi Coi, said: The Party Committee of the Commune has directed the People's Committee of the Commune to seriously implement the payment for forest environmental services. The planning and organization of payment are carried out clearly and transparently: The list, area and amount are publicly posted in the villages so that people can easily monitor, discuss and agree on the usage plan. In 2024, the total payment for forest environmental services of the commune is nearly 850 million VND, of which more than 766 million VND is transferred directly to households and village communities; the rest is for the commune's forest management work.

Thanks to the DVMTR policy, people's awareness of the role and value of forests has been significantly raised. Many households have proactively planted forests and developed medicinal plants under the forest canopy such as Amomum and Cardamom, bringing practical economic value. This is not only a change in awareness but also a change in action, when people consider forests as a source of sustainable livelihood.

Mr. Ly Van Chuong, head of Ngam Lam village, shared: “The village has 105 households assigned to forests with an area of ​​over 200 hectares. We were born and raised close to the forest and the forest is an invaluable source of life, because the forest protects people, provides water for daily life as well as production. From natural water sources, many cold-water fish farming models in Deo Gio have also been formed and are developing. Under the forest canopy, households have additional income from growing Cardamom and Amomum. To increase the effectiveness of forest protection, the village has established a forest patrol team, operating periodically and suddenly, in addition to promoting the effectiveness of the model of "knocking the gong to protect the forest" combined with the flexible Zalo and Facebook systems to help detect and quickly handle forest encroachment violations. In general, in recent years, awareness of forest protection has been significantly improved and has become a top priority in people's lives".

Nam Dan commune currently has 13 villages and a commune-level forest protection team. Each village has a forest protection team, consisting of 8-10 people, who take turns patrolling and detecting violations early. In addition, the commune has also established an effective forest fire prevention and fighting team, ready to respond to emergency situations such as forest fires or illegal logging. Over the past year, the entire forest area in the forest service supply basin in the commune has been safely protected, with no forest fires or encroachment on forest resources. The commune People's Committee has fully implemented the work of monitoring and updating forest developments monthly, quarterly and annually.

Along with the payment of forest environmental services, propaganda work on policies and laws related to forest management, protection and development has also been widely implemented. In 2024, the commune coordinated to organize 15 propaganda sessions with over 1,230 participants and signed commitments to protect forests, prevent and fight forest fires. Propaganda was organized at markets and schools with a total of 395 teachers and students participating, thereby contributing to raising awareness of forest resource protection from the young generation.

The policy of paying for forest environmental services in Nam Dan commune has been going into depth, becoming an important resource to help people increase their income, while raising community awareness in preserving the "green lung". This is a typical model demonstrating effective coordination between the government, people and specialized units in forest resource management associated with local socio-economic development.
