Intellectuals wholeheartedly devoted themselves to the revolutionary cause.

Portrait of Nguyen An Ninh

Nguyen An Ninh was an intellectual and revolutionary fighter who wielded profound and widespread influence throughout two decades (1923-1943) in the patriotic movement, especially in Southern Vietnam. He was a great cultural figure, journalist, and thinker of Vietnam in the early 20th century, a prime example of dedication and self-sacrifice for the cause of national liberation.

He was born in 1900 in his maternal hometown, Long Thuong village, Can Giuoc district, Cho Lon province (now Long An province). His mother was Mrs. Truong Thi Ngu, a woman renowned for her domestic skills and literary talent. As a child, Nguyen An Ninh lived with his maternal grandfather, where he studied classical Chinese and the Four Books and Five Classics. At the age of 10, Nguyen An Ninh moved to Saigon to live with his parents and studied at Chasseloup-Laubat School (now Le Quy Don High School in Ho Chi Minh City).

From a young age, he was intelligent, academically gifted, and considered a prodigy at all levels of education, graduating with honors from Chasseloup-Laubat School. Afterward, he went to France to study Law at the Sorbonne University in Paris – a prestigious institution at the time. Documents record that in just two years, he successfully completed a four-year program, becoming a remarkable phenomenon. His time in France was also when he became acquainted with Marxism-Leninism, worked with Phan Châu Trinh, and met and befriended Nguyễn Ái Quốc.

During his time in France studying for his doctorate, he often created opportunities to travel between Vietnam and France to secretly campaign and build up the revolutionary movement in the country before Nguyen Ai Quoc returned. Through various activities: giving speeches, publishing the newspapers Tieng Chuong Re and Nuoc Nam (in 1923), and establishing the Nguyen An Ninh secret society (in 1924), he spread patriotic ideas, national spirit, and condemned the colonial regime to a large number of people, students, and young people in the country. "He was greatly admired by the people in Southern Vietnam at that time, and contemporary intellectual youth considered him an idol because of his eloquence and excellent journalistic writing skills" (*).

Because of his activities, Nguyen An Ninh was captured five times by the enemy, sentenced to prison, and exiled. In 1943, he died in Con Dao prison after bravely facing the brutal torture of the prison regime and remaining steadfast in the face of the enemy's temptations.

In remembrance of his contributions to the national liberation cause, the State posthumously awarded him the title of martyr and posthumously awarded his mother the title of Heroic Vietnamese Mother.

The school is named after Nguyen An Ninh.

Today, many provinces and cities across the country have schools and streets named after Nguyen An Ninh. In Long Thuong, Long Thuong Secondary and High School officially adopted the name Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School in 2018.

Nguyen Anh Ninh's biography is displayed in the middle of the courtyard of Nguyen An Ninh Junior High School.

The hero's biography is displayed in the middle of the schoolyard. Every year, at the opening ceremony of the new school year, students are introduced to the biography of the revolutionary after whom the school is honored to be named. In addition, the school's Youth Union regularly organizes activities to disseminate and promote the biography of Nguyen An Ninh to students in various forms: integrating it into flag-raising ceremonies, democratic flower-picking activities, etc., to help students understand and be proud of their homeland. Nhan Thien Phuc, a student in class 6/4, said: “Since studying at this school, I have learned more about Mr. Nguyen An Ninh. I am very proud that he was born in Long Thuong. I always try my best to study, both for my own benefit and to be worthy of being a student of a school named after Nguyen An Ninh, because he was very good at studying when he was young.”

According to the Principal of Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School, Vo Minh Quang, the school always focuses on improving the quality of teaching and learning. In addition to setting goals at the beginning of each school year, the school encourages teachers to innovate their methods and apply information technology to teaching. Teachers at the school are always proactive in self-learning to improve the quality of each lesson. The school always cooperates closely with parents to provide timely assistance to students facing difficulties, tutor weak students, and nurture gifted students. Mr. Quang stated: “The school has 19 classes with over 750 students across all grade levels. The promotion and graduation rate for secondary school students is 100%. Every year, over 60% of the school's students achieve good or excellent grades. The school's teachers always strive to achieve the titles of excellent teacher and excellent homeroom teacher.”

Representing the younger generation of Long Thuong commune, we are immensely proud of the hero Nguyen An Ninh and his contributions to the cause of national liberation. The commune's Youth Union always prioritizes traditional education through practical activities: disseminating information about Nguyen An Ninh's biography to its members and young people; organizing visits to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers; and cleaning the memorial monument for fallen soldiers during holidays and festivals. In particular, we always strive to care for and support Youth Union members and young people facing difficulties in life."
