Intellectuals devoted to the revolutionary cause

Portrait of Nguyen An Ninh

Nguyen An Ninh was an intellectual and revolutionary soldier who had a profound and wide influence throughout the two decades (1923-1943) of the patriotic movement, especially in the South. He was a great cultural figure, journalist, and thinker of our country in the early 20th century, a typical example of dedication and self-sacrifice for the cause of national liberation.

He was born in 1900 in his maternal hometown, Long Thuong village, Can Giuoc district, Cho Lon province (now Long An province). His mother was Mrs. Truong Thi Ngu, a woman famous for her housework and good reading. When he was young, Nguyen An Ninh lived with his maternal grandfather and learned Chinese characters and the Four Books and Five Classics. At the age of 10, Nguyen An Ninh went to Saigon to live with his parents and studied at Chasseloup-Laubat School (now Le Quy Don High School - Ho Chi Minh City).

Since childhood, he was intelligent, a good student and considered a prodigy at all levels of education, graduating with honors from Chasseloup-Laubat School. After that, he went to France to study Law at Sorbonne University, Paris - a prestigious school at that time. There are documents recording that, in just 2 years, he excellently completed the 4-year study program and became a remarkable phenomenon. His time in France was also the time when he approached Marxism-Leninism, worked with Phan Chau Trinh, met and became close to Nguyen Ai Quoc.

During his stay in France for his doctorate, he often created many opportunities to travel between Vietnam and France to quietly advocate and build a revolutionary movement in the country when Nguyen Ai Quoc had not returned home. Through many activities: giving speeches, publishing the newspaper Tieng Chuong Re, the newspaper Nuoc Nam (in 1923) and establishing the Nguyen An Ninh Secret Society (in 1924), he spread patriotism, national spirit, and condemned the colonial regime to a large number of people, students, and youth in the country. "He was greatly admired by the people in the South at that time, and the intellectual youth of the time considered him an idol because of his eloquence and good writing skills"(*).

Because of his activities, Nguyen An Ninh was arrested by the enemy five times, sentenced to prison, and exiled. In 1943, he sacrificed his life in Con Dao prison after steadfastly facing the brutal torture of the prison regime as well as remaining steadfast in the face of the enemy's persuasion.

In order to remember his contributions to the cause of national liberation, the State posthumously awarded him the title of martyr and posthumously awarded his mother the title of Heroic Vietnamese Mother.

The school named after Nguyen An Ninh

Nowadays, many provinces and cities across the country have schools and streets named after Nguyen An Ninh. In Long Thuong, Long Thuong Secondary and High School were officially named Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School in 2018.

Nguyen Anh Ninh's biography is placed in the middle of the yard of Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School.

The hero's biography is placed in the middle of the school yard. Every year, on the occasion of the new school year's opening, students are introduced by teachers to the biography of the revolutionary whose name the school is honored to bear. In addition, the school's Youth Union regularly organizes activities to popularize and propagate Nguyen An Ninh's biography to students in many forms: Integrating in flag-salute activities, picking democratic flowers, etc. to help students understand and be proud of their homeland. Nhan Thien Phuc - a student of class 6/4, said: "Since studying at school, I have known more about Mr. Nguyen An Ninh, I am very proud that he was born in his hometown Long Thuong. I always try to study hard, both for my own good and to be worthy of being a student of the school named after Nguyen An Ninh, because he was a very good student when he was young."

According to the Principal of Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School - Vo Minh Quang, the school always focuses on improving the quality of teaching and learning. In addition to making a plan to strive for each school year, the school also encourages teachers to innovate methods and apply information technology in teaching. Teachers at the school are always proactive in self-studying to improve the quality of each lesson. The school always coordinates closely with parents to promptly help students with difficulties, tutor weak and poor students and nurture excellent students. Mr. Quang said: "The whole school has 19 classes, over 750 students at all levels. The rate of students moving up to the next grade and graduating from secondary school is 100%. Every year, the school's good and excellent students reach over 60%. Teachers at the school always strive to achieve the titles of excellent teachers and excellent homeroom teachers"./.

Representing the young generation of Long Thuong, we are extremely proud of the hero Nguyen An Ninh and his contributions to the cause of national liberation. The commune's Youth Union always focuses on educating traditions through practical activities: Disseminating the biography of Nguyen An Ninh to union members and youth; organizing activities to visit Vietnamese Heroic Mothers; cleaning the martyrs' monument on every holiday and New Year. In particular, we always strive to care for and support union members, youth and teenagers facing difficulties in life."
