Nguyen Quoc Anh surpassed Ethiopian athlete to win half marathon

No tournament in the system has witnessed such a surprising and dramatic scenario as VM Quy Nhon 2023 when many athletes took turns leading 42km. The race started with Nguyen Van Long separating from the top early. The eccentric runner opened the pace, at times leaving the group behind by a few hundred meters. After more than half of the race, Van Long still maintained his dominance but the gap behind him with Pham Ngoc Phan, Ly Phi Hai, and Le Van Tuan gradually narrowed.

Van Long then lost the top position to Ly Phi Hai, still following behind were Van Tuan and Ngoc Phan. Surprisingly, at this time, the leading group had the participation of 44-year-old runner - Huynh Thai Loc. Just going down the Thi Nai bridge, the leading group changed hands when Le Van Tuan overtook. Phi Hai lost the advantage and gradually fell behind.

In the last 5km, only Le Van Tuan, Pham Ngoc Phan, and Huynh Thai Loc remained. The three athletes were fiercely chasing each other, only about a meter apart. In the final battle, Thai Loc, with his age disadvantage, accepted to reduce his pace, leaving the competition to the remaining two names. Le Tuan was still leading until the last two hundred meters, when suddenly Ngoc Phan widened his stride, accelerated, and overtook him, to the amazement and endless cheers of the spectators on both sides of the road. The final efforts did not help the champion of VM Quy Nhon in the last two seasons to catch up. Ngoc Phan convincingly became the champion of VM Quy Nhon 2023.
