Nguyen Trung Cuong breaks national record at Asian Athletics Championships

At the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi (Korea), athlete Nguyen Trung Cuong delivered a performance that made Vietnamese sports fans extremely proud.

In the men's 3000m steeplechase, Trung Cuong finished with a time of 8 minutes 38 seconds 25, ranking 5th overall - an impressive result in competition with the continent's top runners.

Not only stopping at a high ranking, the achievement of 8 minutes 38 seconds 25 also helped Trung Cuong break the national record he set at the 2018 U20 World Cup in Finland by 13 seconds.

At that time, Trung Cuong was only 18 years old, causing a stir in the Vietnamese athletics community when he broke the 14-year-old record with a time of 8 minutes 51 seconds 16. Seven years later, Trung Cuong once again wrote history, this time at a new height.

From an 18-year-old boy, Trung Cuong is now a young father, living happily with his wife, former taekwondo fighter Vu Ngoc Anh, and their little daughter. But the flame of passion has never been extinguished.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, Trung Cuong still persistently pursues his big dream, still tirelessly runs step by step, until the day he makes a historic breakthrough.

“The two times I broke the national record, I cried twice when I took off my shoes and kissed the flag on my chest. That feeling is something that nothing else can bring but sports, especially athletics,” Trung Cuong choked up after reaching the finish line.

The race in Gumi was not easy. The heavy rain caused the race to be postponed 5 times. The athletes were soaked and had to wait nearly 2 hours to compete. However, overcoming all obstacles, Trung Cuong showed his brave fighting spirit and extraordinary courage.

“This goal has been a long time coming and Cuong himself has been looking forward to it coming sooner. But that's okay, as long as it comes and comes in a truly surprising and happy way," Trung Cuong expressed.
