Viktor Axelsen underwent back surgery in April and is expected to need around three months to recover before he can return.
At that time, the Danish player was still confident about participating in the Badminton World Championship, where he had won twice in 2017 and 2022.
However, things did not seem to go according to plan for Axelsen. His injury was more serious than expected and he needed more time to recover. Therefore, he decided to skip the World Championships taking place at the end of August.
On Instagram, Viktor Axelsen shared: "After talking with the medical team, I was advised to take more time for the recovery process. Therefore, I will not be ready to compete at the World Championships.
It was really difficult to miss such a big event. However, I did not feel discouraged. On the contrary, I have a lot of motivation to move forward and set new goals."
Viktor Axelsen is considered one of the best tennis players in history, standing in the same league as Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei or Taufik Hidayat. In total, he held the world number 1 position for 183 weeks. His longest streak was 132 weeks, equivalent to more than 2 and a half years.
In addition to 2 world championships, Axelsen also won 2 Olympic gold medals in 2021 and 2024. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he won overwhelmingly without losing any set.
But since that tournament, Axelsen has often been absent from subsequent tournaments due to injury. Because of that, he has now dropped to 18th in the world rankings.
Axelsen's absence from the 2025 Badminton World Championships has caused a lot of regret for fans. However, this will also be an opportunity for other players to compete for this title.
The most prominent is the talent of Thailand, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who is the current champion. There are also names such as Shi Yu Qi (China), Anders Antonsen (Denmark).
